    spooling a spinning reel?

Is there a sure fire way to spool a spinning reel to eliminate or lessen line twist. I usually spool mine with the spool of line in the water but I still have an occasional birds nest fly out. Thanks for any tips.

I put tension on the spool of line and also with my fingers as it goes on the reel. I have 2 30 series Okuma reels and use between 6 and 10 lb test line. I fish several times a week and use my spinning gear for small crank baits and finese worm fishing. I usually change my line every month due to wear and tear of tournament fishing. Some of the best line I have found to us is Berkley Vanish, Shakespere Supreme and Yozuri. I match my line type to the style and water I am fishing. Hope this helps some.

Spool with the label up and crank the handle a few times holding tension with your fingers to keep the line a little tight going on the reel, if the line twists around the rod tip then turn over the spool. There are times it will twist both, label up or label down, for whatever reason. The surefire way I found is to not fill the spool all the way to the top, leave between a 1/16 to 1/8" left without line on your spool. Then when you get to the water take the line, line only, and let it out behind the boat while idleing to get most of it off the spool but not all of it. Engage the bale and pull it thru the water for a couple of minutes. You will feel tension, amazing at the amount of tension the line only will produce. THe line will spin in the water working all twists to the end of the line. THis will leave you with the best line you can put on your spool. Reel up the line and go fishing. THis is the only way I found that is 100% to get the line on the spinning reel with as little problems as possible. I will say that from what I have found the last year or so, you can't show me a line that is made for a spinning reel that will produce no or little memory. If anyone has the answer to a spinning reel line with no memory and excellent fishability then let all of us know.

This is something that works for me .Not saying it's 100% fool proof but after many years of fishing , this is the best I've found for new line on a reel .I got it 3rd hand.A friend of mine got it from Bill Dance's show, so here goes.........Begin by running the line through the 2nd guide above the reel and use a loop knot to secure the line to the spool . Hold the spool upright (with a pencil or whatever your preference is )like you would with a baitcaster EXCEPT that you take the line off the bottom of the spool .Not complicated and pretty effective .Hope it works out for you .

Usually two rules of thumb with spinning reels:
    1) Put the line on the same way it comes off
    2) Never reel the bail closed always shut it by hand

after you spool, do NOT NOT colse the bail with the handle, that puts a 1/2 twist every time you do it,close it by hand. Bill Dance showed me thate on tv along time agao

I take the spinning spool off and wind it on with a drill. Line goes on the same way it comes off the reel. You just need a dowel rod or somethng that fits into the spool with out slipping. Works great everytime. Learned this in outdoor life years ago. Never overfill and put line early to give it time to reform to the smaller spool of the spinning reel. This is the only way to be sure it goes on the reel the same way it came off. You can also do it by hand if you dont have a drill but its time comsming. They used to make a hand crank years ago for this purpose but I've never seen one.

The type of line has a lot to do with it, also. I know everyone has their favorite line, but the best line on casting reels may not be the best for spinning reels. The tough, flat line that works best on "winches" will kink and fall off spinning spools. I prefer the softer braids on spinning gear. If you are like me and think that the fish can see the line then use a leader. Believe me there are a lot of good leader knots out there.

He's right about braided line. It works very well on spinning gear and has 0 memory. It just shows up more in the water than mono or Flourocarbon. You could use a leader like he says but I'm not sure what knot to use to tie braid and mono. I am not sure if a blood knot would slip with the braid. I see the staff of the In-Fishermam us braided line with a Flourocarbon leader while fishing for smallmouth. The zero stretch of braided line may cause some pull offs on with small crankbaits hooks if the rod is too stiff.
