I've had that happen every once in a while. I just figure it's a defect in the line or somehow I got a nick in it. Glad you had a good day.
I was throwing a worm and fishing underwater "humps". I felt the "bump" and set the hook. My line made a "ting" sound and I knew it was a good fish, the fish started swimming to my left and I thought "man this is a BIG fish". So I decided in that brief 3 second window to set the hook again; I gave the rod a big ol' jerk. What happened next was something I have never had happen...............the dang line broke. I was not around anything to get hung on, the line just broke. I never saw the fish but I have fished HARD for over 25yrs and I know it was a very "GOOD" fish. I was heavy, pulling very hard and swimming fast. I did put a 3.10 and it was a perfect evening to spend on the water.
Oh yeah...going to buy some 40-60lb braid today![]()

If there was not a nick in the line, it might possibly broke at the knot. A little curl on the end is a tell - tell sign if you thought to look before re-tying.
That was the first thing I checked. It looked good at straight. I was using 10lb mono on a BPS finesse reel. I think it just could not handle the "ummphhh". When I first started bass fishing I was told to jerk like a "man". I alwasys set the hook on single hook baits like I am trying to rip the lips off. Maybe I just should have let the situation play itself out with the one hook set or just have it a sharp tug??? I dunno but if I am ever presented that set of events again, I'll do the same thing.
wait till its a 1000 dollar fish and you know it then u will feel bad..... i was fishing the bfl this year on laurel and i hooked into a monster smallmouth and it broke me off and i know that this fish was 6 plus shew i had 5 lbs in the boat so this fish would have atleast put me up to around 10 pr 11 and that was a top 5 plus big fish was only 5 lbs or so.... but sometimes if u get to big of line the fish can see it and they arent as inclined to bite....
Now the first thing is sound's like you had my pet named Linda she a mean one--The second thing is the line my have hit something under water or maybe a weak place from a past backlash but 10lb on CC is a risk --Now i can tell you some of those big bass have got some sharp teeth--But glad you had some fun---GL to us all![]()
Ps: did Wormin put you on that spot? lol
IMHO todays hooks are so sharp you don't have to pull the lips from their mouth. I've seen some guys set the hook so hard they break the hook! A good flick of the wrist and some good low stretch line and you'll land your hog....
I'm going to try to make you feel better about what happened. Based on your description of such a heavy fish, and the line parting after a period of tension, and the extra jerk, and 45 years of fishing experience, it is quite possible you had a catfish not a bass. I've got many cats on plastic including 4 in one day on a black worm a 7 lb. channel and 3 smaller shovelheads. I've also lost a lot of cats at the boat using mono when their hard upper gum saws thru the line.
Your right on, hook sets don't need to be Gorilla style especially if you use the proper equipment. For example don't use a 6ft rod with 12 lb test while fishing Carolina Rigs in 20 ft of water.![]()
