I just got back from fishing the big G for the first time. I was really impressed with the average size of fish in this lake. Pretty much every time you set the hook it was three pounds. We never really caught one of the big ones. On the first day I caught one that was 5 1/2. We did catch several in or around the four pound class. The weather really didnt help out much this trip. The first day it was 74 and partly sunny. Sunday when we left it was rainy and 47. During this trip we got hailed on (marble sized one time) twice. The cold front kinda shut the bite down for us. Not majorly but we had to adjust. I'm sure some most other people that knew the lake were still on them big time. On the first day we could catch them on a citrus redeye shad but after the cold front really set in we caught most of our fish on green pumpkin yum woolybuggers. We were catching fish the first couple days in shallow pockets with young grass in it. After the cold front we moved out to the main lake in front of the pockets fishing the grass out there. If you found the right type grass in it you were around fish. It was a really fun trip and I cannot wait to go back.

I've been told by MANY guys that Lake Guntersville has its own weather system...having been there a few times and witnessed it, I'm a believer! No matter what the surrounding area is forcasted to have, Lake G makes its own weather system and most of the time it gets nasty!
Glad to hear your got into 'em pretty good, Bassman. What section of the lake were you in? I fish Siebold Creek area quite a bit, but I hear that up by Scottsboro is the place to be in early Spring. Also, where did you stay at while you were there...hotel, local lodging, the State Park? I'm looking at going down in June and am looking at a different place to stay than my usual hang out.
Guys- if you haven't fished the Big G...you don't know what you're missing!! Fish it now while it's hot...I imagine in a few years it'll be fished out or the TVA will mess with the grass that grows in that lake.
I did fish in the Siebold creek area. I pretty much fished from their north to the bridge in Scottsboro. We stayed at Village Inn. It is right by Siebold Creek on 431. Not a bad place to stay. Nothin fancy but it was clean. We put in at Waterfront ramp.
Bassman, I was there the same time you were.We had some good luck also. I had one that went 8.6lbs and another at 7.2lbs. We stayed in North Saulty. The trick for us were a shaky head in purple haze, and xr50's in royal purple and rayburn red. We were there Monday thru Fri. and we averaged about 22lbs per day(5 fish) Most of our fish were in 3-4 feet of water.
I too can not wait until next March to return for the big momma's. Will get back down in Sept or Oct. to do some frog and rat fishing.
