WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 5 FEET, STAINED & 49 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL
Bass fishing has improved this week with the warmer temperatures in the afternoon. My best bites have come later in the afternoon after the sun has had time to warm water temperatures. Largemouth’s are beginning to move into spawning pockets in a pre spawn pattern lake wide. Most of my fish have been caught shallow in the first half of spawning pockets. Use mid depth crankbaits in a shad pattern for these fish. Crankbaits to choose from are a Bomber 4A, Bandit 200, or a Rapala Shad Rap. Make long casts to the bank and retrieve with a slow to moderate retrieve. Lipless crankbaits are producing some of my better fish, but received fewer bites as compared to crankbaits. Spotted bass have begun to move up on lay downs and shallow rock on main lake. Use a 1/8 oz Davis Baits Shaky head with a Zoom green pumpkin trick worms. Spotted bass will become more aggressive over the next couple of weeks leading to the spawn.
Hybrid and striper fishing is good. Fish have begun working their way into the mouths of major creeks and river. Using your electronics drop live shad and jigging spoons for these fish that are relating to structure within these areas. During slow periods troll crankbaits from ten to twelve feet depths in creek channels near main river. Follow the contours closely going into the mouth of creeks. Once you have located fish continue trolling the same area for schools of fish. The most productive areas have been Yellow Jacket Creek, Whitewater Creek, and Wehadkee Creek.
Crappie fishing has been great. Schools of crappie are beginning to stack on main lake cover in eighteen to twenty feet deep. Minnow presentations used close to cover have produced the best. Look for deep lay downs and brush piles for best success. Trolling in creek mouths has also produced some great strings. Some of the best creeks have been Whitewater Creek and Half Moon Creek. Use Jiffy Jigs in black and chartreuse and pink and white colors or minnow presentations for best success when trolling.
