Barren Lake fishing Report Updated October 28, 2009

Barren River lake is still near summer pool.
Water temps are in the mid to hi 60's.
Lake is clear.
Bass are holding on main lake points and along the edges of channels in creeks.
Jesse reports some good bass fishing up river from the state park.
Good fish being caught on surface and buzz baits on a regular basis. Jesse is using a Nemire Spoon Buzz Bait that I gave him a couple of weeks ago to some good success. Green and Black are working well, as well as the gold color.
Hybrid fishing is starting to pick up with some good fish in the 5 pound range starting to show up.
Jigging spoons, and live bait are working well.

September 26, 2009
Hyybrids - Good near the dam and around the islands most of last week. Weather had them a little off today.
Jesse went fishing yesterday and had 7 keepers in 3 hours biggest 4 pounds. (Catch and release)
A tournament today took only 16 pounds to win, but 2nd place was 8 pounds and 3rd place was 6 pounds.
Crappie are starting to accumulate around brush piles in the creeks in about 12 feet of water.
The COE has stopped drawing lake while they are dropping Nolin and Rough.

September 16, 2009
Jesse Reports that fishing this week has improved immensely.
'Lower temps and clear water have turned on the hybrids, white bass and Large Mouth Bass.
Look for hybrids around the islands, and the State Park beach. White bass and yellow bass are also hitting.
Largemouth are starting to move shallower, but are mostly being found on the creek channel edges.

August 31, 2009
Water Temp Low 80's
Hybrids are starting to really turn on with Jesse Reporting that good fish in the 5 to 10 pound range are being caught.
Crappie are starting to move to shore but Jesse tells me that he is having problems getting the bait to the crappie with all the yellow bass and white bass that are shallow right now.
Bass are starting to heat up as well, with limits of fish in the 24 pound range being required to win tournaments this weekend.

August 2, 2009
Barren River Lake - Water is in the low 80's, summer pool, and steady despite rain.
Fairly clear, to murky in some creeks.
Bass Fishing is Fair.
Small bass to 2 pounds are being caught on topwater baits. Bigger bass on artificial worms deep.
Hybrids are slow.
Yellow bass are fair on small spinners and twister tails.

July 27
Water temps have dropped with the cold weather. Water is fairly clear.
Fish have moved into deeper and cooler water.
The thermocline is normally about 13 feet this time of year. Jesse reports that the Thermocline has dropped to 20 feet.
Bass are holding deep. Hitting DD Cranks and Carolina rig worms.
Hybrids are hitting along with yellow and white bass on the main lake. Trolling seems to be working the best.
Look for these conditions to continue with the cooler weather we are seeing.

July 13
Jesse reports that fishing for hybrids is excellent. On a trip Thursday his group limited out in about an hour and proceeded to fish till they had caught and released 2 limits of fish. Most were in the 3 to 5 pound range.
Bass are holding in about 15 feet of water along the thermocline. Look for them at ambush points on the lake at night and early on any break where bait fish are congregating.
Water is about 83 degrees and at summer pool. Clear

July 5, 2009
Fishing is fair to good.
Big tournament last week brought in over 900 pounds of bass with a limit of fish weighing 22 pounds.
Hybrids are being caught trolling a fluke in about 10 to 13 foot of water.
Mostly smaller fish in the 1 to 3 pound range and others in the 3 to 5 pound range.
Fish are moving around a lot, so they are not where you fished the day before.
Fish are spooky, due to shallow thermocline caused by the recent rains.
Good hatches of bait fish are everywhere on the lake.
Water temps are in the low 80's to 85
Water is fairly clear but raining almost every day the last week.
Lake is around summer pool plus a tenth of an inch or so despite rains.

June 9, 2009

Jesse says that the fish are biting like crazy on Barren River. Limits of good hybrids from 2 to 11 pounds are being caught on Eerie Deeries, Crankbaits and Spoons.
Water is 2 feet above summer pool and dropping. Water temps are in the high 70's, and fairly clear over most of the lake.

May 29, 2009
Fishing is heating up despite the lake being a bit high. Water temps are in the 70's and hybrids are chasing shad and alewives early in the AM and late in the evening near dark.
Bass are fair to good in the creeks.
Bluegill and shellcracker are fair.
Crappie are good in about 10 foot of water deeper on cover in some places. With the lake up about 5 feet you want to fish deeper than normal for this time of year for crappie.

May 26

Jesse reports he went fishing last Tuesday afternoon and the Hybrids were "really" biting. Water temp was 70 degrees. He was taking one about every thirty minutes on a jigging spoon. Size ranged from about 17" to 5 pounds.

My husband and I recently visited Barren River Lake and spent the day with your guide Jessie. What fun we had! Jessie was delightful. He really knows the lake and answered all of our "fishin" questions. I would recommend Jessie to anyone wanting to have a great day on Barren River Lake. Sincerely, Cheryl and Rick Jones
