Water temps are ranging
from 49-55. The lake is at normal levels but should rise above normal
levels after the weekend rain.
Bass are hitting a variety of lures right now such as traps and
spinnerbaits, stick with your light or shad colors. These are mainly
being used in or over the grass flats. Jigs and soft plastics in the
grass and on the cypress are catching some decent bass also. Brown and
Tennessee Shad colored crankbaits on the cypress trees in 3-6 ft. of
water are catching bass also.
Crappie are fair right now. Shiners and 1/16 oz. jigs in most any color
combo will catch Crappie from around the edges of the grass and pads on
the channel drops. Try fishing the laydowns on the edges of the steeper
drops in the river also.
We have also been catching some big numbers of huge white bass in the
Big Cypress channel...when they are up schooling most any topwater or
trap will work and when down try using tailspinners, spoons, and traps
hopped off the bo ttom.
May is the month that Kids (and Adults who still enjoy being a
Kid) really enjoy! The Topwater White Bass action usually kicks in gear
and it's not unusual to see acres of Whites boiling the surface and
chasing the baitfish. Often, the Gulls are flying overhead, dipping and
diving for a meal also. It's a real "visual" activity and one that you
won't forget when you really get into the fish. I find that a
Blue/Chrome Rattletrap or a Clear Tiny Torpedo are deadly on the
Topwater fish. If you like light line and can cast really good, downsize
your bait to a 1/8 oz. Rattletrap, and you'll find you catch more fish.
The Whites are often chasing small shad, and won't hit the larger 1/4
oz. Rattletrap. When the fish go down, keep a Silver or Chartruse
Glitter Slab handy, and continue to fish the area you last saw the fish
in. (You can find these Slabs at Fisherman's Point Marina & Edward's
Hardware)The fish are usually still there, they're just feeding below
the surface. If you get really LUCKY, you'll sometimes catch the Hybrid
Stripers schooling also. Put down the Ultra-Light equipment if this
happens, as these "Speed Merchants" hit hard and pull for a long time!
Best areas to look for the Schooling Fish include the Main Lake area out
from Fisherman's Point Marina, the Hwy 309 Flats, Pelican Island, and
the Windsock Point in the late afternoon.
Crappie will be deep now as the Spawn is over. Small minnows or
Jigs worked around the 287 Bridge Columns will usually result in a
few fish. The standing timber out from Hickey Island and the timber
around the Dogleg hold fish this time of the year. However, for best
results, build your own Brushpiles. It's a bit of work, but if you put
them in areas where there is very little other structure, it will draw
the baitfish and Crappie. Early morning, late afternoon and night
fishing will produce more fish in the late Spring & Summer.
I continue to hear good reports on the Largemouth fishing on RC,
but I don't spend much time chasing these "slower" biting fish, and as
most Locals know the Catfish always seem to be biting on RC! May is a
GREAT month to fish as it's not too Cold, not too Hot, and the Spring
Weather Patterns that often keep us off the Lake are behind us.

JOHN 15:
Verse 7; If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you; ye shall ask what
ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
SAM RAYBURN; Well Bass fishing has been great with Bass up to 7 1/2 lbs.
The Spawn is for the most part over, with Bass pretty beat up and in the
healing stage. But alot of the Post spawn females have the feed bag on.
30 bass a day has been comming to the boat with some quality Bass. You
know me I love the wacky worm style fishing I can take my time and pick
an area apart. The wacky is catching right now with good colors being
Watermelons and Green Pumpkins. Jigs in Black & Blue with Green pumpkin
trailers have been catching some Bigger Bass up to about 6 lbs.
Some of the Bigger Bass have been caught on Carolina rigs fished out on
your deeper flats and main Lake Points. Good baits have been
grubs, french fries, lizards, and flukes. Same colors have been working
well. Carolina rigs have been working in 8-12 feet.
