All of a sudden, the tuna have made their appearance on the fishing scene in Beach Haven to add to the offerings of the boats of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association.
The “Hot Tuna” captained by Bob Gerkens came out fast during the Beach Haven Tuna Open Tournament sponsored by the Beach Haven Marlin and Tuna Club. The crew weighed in three yellowfin tuna on the first day of the event topped by a fish weighing 39.4-pounds. These fish were caught offshore. Captain Bob tried inshore for bluefin tuna on the second day. When they hooked into a big fish putting up a 3-hour struggle, they thought they had hit pay dirt. The fish turned out to be a 348.5-pound thresher shark.
Captain Gary Dugan just installed a new Minn Kota electric motor on the “Irish Jig” and was anxious to try it out. He and his wife Tracy made a quick trip into the ocean and managed some nice black sea bass, a couple of triggerfish, and all the snapper blues they wanted to catch along with some big blackfish that were released.
Captain Brett Taylor of “Reel Reaction Sportfishing” reports solid fluke fishing the last two days with a total of 13 keepers. Despite stiff winds and heavy smoke from the Canadian forest fires, the Jay Brining family from Ohio ended up with 8 keepers to 22-inches. Some of the fish had starfish in their stomachs. Next up was Mike Galindo and sons who caught fish to 23-inches.
