From the late 1800s, there has been an active charterboat fleet in and around Beach Haven, NJ. That fleet continues today as the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association with boats available for charter fishing in Beach Haven and Holgate, as well as Tuckerton and Little Egg Harbor on the mainland. All Elite Fleet Captains are experienced and are licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard and insured.
Wow, what a storm Long Beach Island went through Thursday night! Conditions like those are why the captains of the Beach Haven Charter Fishing Association carefully check weather forecast and radar readings as well as communicating with each other before every fishing trip. While water conditions on Friday might have been a little dirty after the winds and rains, the water quality should be back to normal by Saturday morning. Meanwhile fishing reports from the BHCFA captains indicate the fluke bite is getting stronger day by day while those boats traveling offshore in pursuit of big game fish are returning with fish dinners in the coolers.Captain Dave Wittenborn had the Groton Gun Club from Hunterdon County on the “Benita J” for a tuna trip. Hearing outstanding reports from the previous day, Captain Dave was expecting a banner day. Unfortunately, it doesn’t always work out that way. When he reached the tuna grounds he met a massive fleet of boats. There were no visual signs of life with very few birds, not much bait, and shaky water quality. They worked on the edge of the fleet and briefly hooked a marlin. One tuna bite resulted in a nice 60–70-pound class yellowfin. They made the decision to switch to tile fishing, a decision that paid off. The anglers landed over twenty golden tiles in one drift, saving what was a slow day, and everyone went home with a pile of fish filets. Captain Brett Taylor of “Reel Reaction Sportfishing” took the opportunity to fish with his dad on his boat last Sunday morning. They fished a number of Captain Brett’s Favorite areas and ended the morning 2-hour trip with thirty short fluke and two keepers to 21.5 inches. Captain Brett spent the afternoon with his sons, Jake and Luke. Despite tough conditions, the boys managed two keeper fluke to 23-inches plus a 14-inch weakfish. Among his other charters this past week Captain Brett had the Bidwell family of upstate New York out and despite gusty winds, they boxed five keeper fluke along with a cocktail bluefish.
