One of the most common questions I'm asked is, when's the best times to go fishing? My typical response is whenever you have a chance. Well judging on my adventures last week I have to tell you that fishing right now is good as it gets in Central Florida .

In a wink of an eye our Atlantic cobia run is passing us by, and because of our windy March and April I was thinking this year's run was going to allude me. Well it didn't.
Last February I donated a fishing charter to the silent auction at the Wounded Warrior Outdoors's Cocktails for a Cause fundraiser in Orlando. The highest bidder was Danny Mellow from Geneva Florida, and instead of doing the charter in my boat, Danny wanted me to go in his boat and to show him the ropes for near-shore fishing out of Port Canaveral. On several occasions this spring we had the trip scheduled, but high seas and snotty conditions forced us to postpone. Last Wednesday the conditions were right and we headed out on an epic cobia adventure joined by my good friend and veteran fishing guide Captain John Kumiski. The trip started out slow as live bait (pogies) was difficult to find. It has been my experience or call it luck, that when bait is hard to catch the fishing is good, and as it turned out, I was right. We departed the Port around 0800 and headed south looking for bait which we finally located off of Patrick AFB. From there we ran north looking for fish only to find one small tripletail which was not interested in playing with us. After four hours of looking, I made the decision to try deeper waters where Danny caught two monster kingfish and a free swimming cobia in about 50 feet of water. The day was running long, so we made the decision to work our way in looking for rays and cobia, and as look would have it, we located a large group of rays and Danny added four more cobia to his first day of fishing on Florida's Atlantic coast. On our way back Danny asked me if it's always like this, and I replied that this is just one of those great epic fishing events where we were in the right place at the right time.

Later in the week I was freshwater fishing in Lake Harney, and again the bass were chewing and we ended the five hour charter with 56 largemouths and one very large catfish that came unbuttoned at the boat.
