    Spotted Sea Trout Bite

    The Brunworth Brothers Scored!

Owen Brunworth, Captain Matt Williams, and Jacob Brunworth show us the catching way!

These fish are definitely in the ambush mode!

For those of you that want to target the old spotted sea trout, well it could be your time. However, as with any fish, especially during hot times like these, certain things have to come together. For instance: Spotted sea trout are basically sight feeders so therefore clear water is a must…So I suggest finding some clear water over and around any sort of structure such as oysters beds. They love to kill first and then eat so therefore live baits are the ticket to getting a more solid hook up. The best baits have been live shrimp and finger mullet. However, on some fishing drops the spotted sea trout only kills the finger mullet, but they don’t eat it. I don’t have a logical reason for this occurrence I just know it is happening.

Spotted sea trout are also considered ambush feeders, which mean they hide, watch, and then stage the attack. Banks that have any sort of subtle breaking wave action offer up a great ambush feeding opportunity for a spotted sea trout. When the wave rolls onto the bank it picks up anything loose and as it recedes it pulls everything back into the water from small shells, snails, clams, roots, and other small marine creatures. The clearest part of the wave is the back side and this is just about where the spotted sea trout can be found. Smaller fish and other marine creatures are busy feeding on anything that will fit into their mouth. And the spotted sea trout, well, they are in the attack mode and what’s look good they hit. I suggest fishing behind the wave while using either a popping or adjustable cork rigged with some sort of live bait. You best depth fish is going to be about 1 foot under the surface.

    Sound Fishing
Whiting, sharks, stingrays, summer trout, blue fish, hakes, ribbon fish, croaker, and spots

Captain Rick Reynolds holding a nice shark!

Larger whiting are sometimes referred to as bull whiting.

Bottom fishing in the sound can certainly be interesting...

We have been catching whiting of all sizes from small to large. The larger whiting are called bulls. Here’s the thing about a whiting, when you catch one fish there is usually another one right were you caught the first one. If the bite doesn’t materialize, all you have to do is, reel in, and re-locate your bait. The best bait s for Whiting, sharks, stingrays, summer trout, blue fish, hakes, ribbon fish, croaker, and spots is small pieces of air dried shrimp. When the bite slows while using shrimp I suggest making a whiting cocktail.

To step up to a bigger size bites use larger baits.

This is what we call a whiting cocktail. Small pieces of air dried shrimp work and work great when plain old bottom fishing. However, if the bite slows size up your bait and go with a whiting cocktail. The ingredients for a whiting cocktail are simple: one small piece of shrimp and one small piece of whiting laced on to your hook?
