    Spanish mackerel have arrived!

Here is a perfect example of exactly what Spanish mackerel does to bait, when the feeding frenzy is over. Shown in this picture is a bait ball also called a round up. After the feeding frenzy is over the school of feeding fish, in this case Spanish mackerel, herd the bait up into a ball. Bait being herded think that the tighter they school they form the bigger they will look, which in turn will hopefully scare off the predators. Sometimes the bait wins and sometimes they don’t. There are two baits balls in this picture. On this particular day the Spanish instead of pushing the bait fish into one big ball they separated them into small balls. Really kind of interesting! Best baits are 0 and 00 Clark Spoons trolled or pitched in or around the school.

    King mackerel

Over the past few years there hasn’t been much to talk about when it came to the king mackerel bite. Here’s what I do know..About a month ago we caught juvenile king mackerel in the 21 inch range one after the other. There were mixed in and feeding with Spanish mackerel. It has been a while seen I have seen any juvenile king mackerel to speak of. Then last week while grouper fishing with a live ruby red lips as bait a 38 pound king mackerel was landed. The fish just happen to hit the large 13/0 circle hook just right and it got hook up instead of cutting it off. Since this time while grouper fishing I have had several cut offs! So with this report you ought to give live lining a try for king mackerel!

    Savannah Snapper Banks

Even thought fishermen had to deal with raging drifts and straight down and sideways rain as well as occasional waterspouts they still caught fish! The desire to fish was still there!

Steve Raschke is holding a nice genuine red snapper that he caught, fought, and landed all on his own.

Jim Price, Zeke Rissman, and Chris Newton had quite a fish catching day while plain old bottom fishing that the Savannah Snapper banks.
