Inshore Fishing!
Good one day, great the other, and then there are those days when you can’t find a suitable bite! The good news during this time of the year there is most always something to catch that can really stretch your line!
During this time of the year bait shops on some occasions have either sold out of shrimp or can’t catch the right size for fishing. Shrimp during the month are sometimes too small or too large! May father used to say, “During the full moon stage the shrimp get the “Red Legs,” which means they are just about to head out to the sound!” In my father’s book of sayings that matched what was happening at the time, the red legs definitely meant the shrimp were most likely pawn size and too big to use for inshore fishing. However, if you are doing some cobia fishing around the can/buoys in the channel, the larger shrimp will work just fine.
Here’s what you do for bait when you can’t get the ever popular shrimp. I suggest getting out the old cast net and catching you some peanut pogies, because they are definitely great baits. I had someone say, “I don’t think I could use peanut pogies for bait” and I asked, “Why?” The fishermen said, “I don’t believe in them!” Being a fisherman myself, I definitely understand that bait used, especially if you don’t believe in them, will not work. Don’t ask why, but they don’t! So here’s what I suggest, “Just take my word for it, peanut pogies will work!” How do you use them, lip hook them and use a slip cork to keep them at a certain depth..the fish will do the rest and I think you will be pleased with the catching outcome!
While inshore fishing with the Miss Judy Charters inshore gang, Cindy Capriles and Kate Caudill, accomplished a lot of catching personal bests!
Cindy Capriles nice spotted sea trout!
Kate Caudill nice slot red fish!
