Wow it’s almost the end of July already. This summer is really flying by. Here in South Florida as probably everywhere in the world the weather has not been as one might expect for summer. I for one look forward to the calm mornings that are a norm for South Florida but that has not been the case this year. This year we have experienced lots of wind and plenty of rain. These weather conditions have kept me off the water a lot more than most summers. I know this is not painting a pretty picture for someone that might be thinking about hitting the water anytime soon but don’t let the weather stop you from planning a fishing trip in the near future. There are plenty of fish to be caught here in South Florida in areas that it isn’t raining or where the wind might be a thing to consider.




Biscayne Bay has had enough small baitfish to catch with a cast net. These baitfish have been producing steady catches of sea trout from sizes of small fish to over 24 inches. Mixed in with the sea trout have been snappers, jacks, ladyfish, barracudas and a few Spanish mackerel that decided to hang out instead od heading back up north. We are also getting shots at small tarpon, snook and small bull sharks. Most of this action has taken place during my 7 to 11 AM trips.


Offshore fishing has been slow all year and every time I have tried my luck offshore the seas were high making fishing in my Bay boat difficult. Recently the seas have calmed and dolphins are being caught out in the blue water.




Flamingo is always my place to go in the summer. Yes it’s hot and there may be some bugs to contend with while you’re at the dock but the rewards out weight the heat and bugs. The crowds of visiting fishermen are gone till November so you have the whole Park to yourselves. Snook, redfish and tarpon are hungry and eating pinfish, mullet, surface plugs and Gulps fished on a Hookup lure. There are plenty of snappers and trout out over the banks and limit catches can come quickly. Lots of jacks and ladyfish are always mixed in with the snappers and trout. Then there is the permits, large jacks, tarpon, cobia and giant bull sharks and goliath groupers that can be targeted over the rockpiles.
