Late summer is now with us but it’s like fishing early fall. A lot of shad is in the back of creeks and on the main lake flats in the Paris area. This is due to the heavy rains we had after the fourth of July, then the cool summer. After the fourth of July the lake level went up and we had the strong main lake currents that caused the bait to seek areas that they could escape the current that was the creeks.
There are several patterns to fish right now. I am catching fish on secondary ledges in the mouths of creeks and on the flats of Paris to new Johnsonville. The further south you go the better the hydrilla than in the Paris area, so the ledge bite is better in the Paris area due to the lack of hydrilla.
On the ledge bite I’m fishing jigs, ZOOM ole monster worms and Bag5 Blue glimmer and Green gizzard medium diving crankbaits.
About the Danville area to new Johnsonville I am focusing more in the creeks and hydrilla beds. There is a ton of shad fry in the creeks, look for schooling fish, and any kind of cover you can find. There has been a really good bite on spinnerbaits and a square bill crankbaits.
On the main lake flats I’m looking for the good hydrilla beds I will see these beds with my Lowrance structure scan by idling over the flats, just hit a way point once you see these areas then go back and fish them very thorough. Use search baits once you find the hydrilla like a shallow square bill, Rat L Trap and spinnerbaits. Once you find them they will be a school of them in the area. So after you fish the faster baits stop and flip a ZOOM Tube or Z hog in those areas.
It’s really important to use a good fluorocarbon line, I trust nothing but Seaguar, it’s has super knot strength and its very sensitive, which is important in feeling those light bites. Flip with a heavy action Lews rod and a high speed reel. 20 lb test AbrazX is what I’m flipping and I’m casting my spinner bait on the same. I know from experience not all fluorocarbon lines are equal!
The square bill and trap I’m using 15lb fluorocarbon. On 7ft Lews rod and reel, I like a med action rods on these baits so that I can still rip the baits free when it snags in the grass, this will trigger more strikes for me than just cranking the bait over the grass, a lot of these areas are getting a lot of pressure, so you will need to make your bait snag the grass and rip it free, making it do things that the other anglers aren’t doing will catch better and more bass for you. Also using a color of bait that isn’t seen over and over will make a difference, look up bag5.com to see his custom colors, they will make a difference in your fishing.
For you serious anglers it’s been a wet summer and it’s probably going to be a wet fall, if you’re tired of getting wet on the lake I highly suggest that you stop by Fishermans Headquarters and see the Gill Rain gear I recently picked one up and it’s the only rain gear that I’ve ever used and have stayed 100% dry

Ledge Fishing on the water class
The fish are on the ledges good and it’s a good time to learn and get confidence by catching fish on the ledges
If you’re new to Kentucky Lake or just haven’t been able to figure out how to fish the hundreds of miles of ledges that it has to offer. Then this class is for you. Fishing the ledges is something a lot of anglers struggle with. Understanding what ledges hold fish, when they hold fish and why they hold fish is something I can teach you. I will help you eliminate 90% of the lake in a short time. See what type of areas hold fish and how to find the bait.
Get on schools of fish and get them fired up! This is some of my favorite techniques on this amazing lake. Just give me a call or email me at
