It's hard to believe, water temps are still mid-50s on Lake Fork this late in the winter. So the fishing is much better than normal. In a normal winter, almost all the fish are bunched up in 40ft of water and basically hibernating (very slow fishing). I expect them to get in that pattern before the end of the month. But currently they are in a typical late-November/early December pattern.
Christmas eve and Christmas day, the air temps were 70s and the water temp was 58-60 degrees. White bass were stacked up where we could catch about as many as we wanted in just about every spot I checked. We probably caught 100 in a 1/2 day on Christmas on spoons. Largemouths were in several of the spots, and we caught quite a few on drop-shots and tailspinners, as well as a few on spoons. Then a cold front came in and brought the lake up 3 feet in one day (on Dec 27). With the gates running full blast and the muddy water getting progressively colder, I expected the water temps to be low 50s and the fishing to be tough. But I went out for a morning trip on New Years eve and surprisingly it was still 56 degrees. I took out a couple of kids and their dad for a few hours before they caught their plane back to Colorado. I planned on putting them on some white bass, but they were off that pattern and I didn't take the time to repattern them. So we fished for largemouths and surprisingly caught a bunch, including a couple that broke off and a giant that shook the bait when it jumped.
Yesterday, I went out for 2-3 hours and caught about 35 white bass and a handful of largemouths. Water temp was still 55-56 degrees.
