Both lakes are one and one half foot above winter pool. Kentucky Dam was spilling at an average rate of just above 165,000 cfs today. Barkley Dam was spilling at a rate of 64,500 cfs this afternoon. The latest lake levels , current flows and forecasts for all the TVA lakes can be found at http://www.tva.com/river/lakeinfo/index.htm. With the lake levels down, boaters need to be cautious when navigating the lakes. These are big lakes, but they are shallow river lakes. If you are not familiar with the lakes, make sure you use the navigation lanes and if you are not sure of the depths and locations of obstructions where you are, idle your boat until you are in safe water.

FLASH: It is great to be back on the water with a new season getting under way. I have enjoyed teaching classes this past winter and meeting a lot of new folks but it is time to get back out and go catch those bass! I will be teaching a few classes this month but most of my time will definitely be spent on the water with weather permitting...you never know about the weather in March. So far it certainly looks like we may have an early spring this year, let’s keep our fingers crossed! Of course I will be writing my weekly fishing report again this year as always so this is the first of many to come.

General Conditions: As you can see our water temperatures are coming right along and never did get extremely low this winter. We have had a constant flow of a lot of water all winter coming through from the south and this heavy flow is still with us. My experience so far has been that a number of fish are already inside the creeks and bays no doubt because of the strong current we have had all winter but there is still a fair share on the main lake points associated with current breaks. A myriad of lures and patterns have been working on any given day. Kentucky Lake water ranges from lightly stained to stained. Lake Barkley water ranges from heavily stained to stained.

The weather forecast for tomorrow is for a high of 50/low iof 36 with wind N6. Saturday’s forecast is for a high of 61/ low of 31 with wind SW12. Sunday is calling for a high of 60/ low of 46 with wind SE10. The extended forecast into next week is calling for high’s in the mid 60’s, low’s in the 40’s with south quadrant winds and chances of rain and thunderstorms beginning on Tuesday and extending through the week. This is a time of the year for quick changes in the forecast for both weather and winds so I caution you to check the latest forecasts for late changes especially in the wind forecasts.

LARGEMOUTH BASS: Largemouth are being taken on main lake points and on the main lake banks with current breaks. These fish are being taken on Alabama rigs, suspending jerk baits, slow rolled crank baits, jigs and shaky heads. Largemouth are being taken on ledges inside the mouths of the deeper creeks and bays on Alabama rigs, jigs and shaky heads. Largemouth are being taken on secondary channel points and banks inside the creeks and bays on Alabama rigs, slow rolled crank baits, suspending jerk baits, jigs and shaky heads. On warm days there are active fish being taken shallow in the creeks and bays on shallow running crank baits and lipless crank baits.

SMALLMOUTH BASS: Smallmouth are being taken on main lake points and main lake banks with current breaks. Smallmouth are also being taken on ledges inside the mouths of the creeks and bays as well as on secondary channel points inside the mouths of the creeks and bays. These fish are being taken on Alabama rigs, suspending jerk baits, slow rolled crank baits and jigs.

PRODUCTIVE LURES: Some of the productive lures reported this week are: Picasso bait ball rigs with Keitech swim baits in pro blue and French pearl as well as Big Hammer swim baits in pearl and sexy smelt, Lucky Craft slender pointer suspending jerk baits in pearl ayu, Smithwick suspending jerk baits table rock shad and Rapala Xrap suspending jerk baits in clown, Rapala shadraps in demon and original crawdad, Strike King DT 10 in red crawdad, Slong’s football jig in black/blue and Cumberland craw, D&L baby advantage jig in Cumberland craw, Slong’s shaky head jigs with Charmer shaky head worm in green pumpkin and bama bug.

CRAPPIE: Crappie are being taken over brush piles in 12-20 ft of water around the mouths of the creeks and bays by vertically fishing with minnows and jigs tipped with minnows. I have had a few reports of some Crappie being taken in 5-10 ft of water around brush and submerged stake beds on warmer days on minnows and by casting jigs.
