  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN .71 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 70’S

Bass fishing on Lake Lanier continues to be been very good. The morning bite has been excellent with a variety of baits to include: jerkbait, swimbait, topwater, spinnerbait, and a fluke. The focus with these baits should be fairly shallow on flats and shallower rocky points and humps as well. When the fun stuff bite slows down, switch to a worm on a 3/16 oz Davis Shaky Head and work it slow. Focus on main lake rocky points and on secondary points as well. The spots seem to be finishing up the spawn as we are starting to catch a lot of post spawners now. There are still a few that have yet to go, but the majority have completed the process. The post spawners are often lethargic and will be for a couple of weeks. A worm or a fluke are very good baits for these less aggressive post spawn fish. Often these fish can be found in the 12 to 15 foot depth ranges around rocky or clay points and humps. I am completely booked for May. Thank you for all the calls! Here is what I have open in June: 15, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 28, 29, and 30. The spots are on fire and the post spawn topwater bite in June will be insane!! Don't miss out! Give me a call and let's go fishing.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is good. The key question this week has been, do I pull free lines and boards or do I switch continues to down rods and fish deeper? There are a lot fisherman on both sides of the question but we have been doing both. We are pulling boards and free lines shallow for the first hour and then switching to down rods deeper over a 40 to 60 foot bottom off deep water points the rest of the day. Clearly the down rod bite has outperformed the free line bite but the fish are still busting bait early morning and free lines and boards are the best way to capitalize on this early opportunity. The top water bite has slowed some with the spook outperforming the red fin. There is also a Spotted Bass bite early and they will hit the spook. Check your baits often as the Spotted Bass with kill your Herring without you noticing. We pulled the Umbrella rig this week and caught some fish but the bait bite is clearly you best bet. There are fish lake wide with mid lake having a slight advantage over the extreme North and South. The lake temperature has jumped into the low to mid 70’s. The water is clear on the main lake and stained in the backs of the creeks. The lake is at full pool. This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

Crappie fishing is good to excellent during the month of May. Some of the crappie we are targeting are still on docks with structure at about twenty to twenty five feet deep, but the majority have moved to stand alone submerged brush piles at similar depths. Those close to a creek channel and toward the backs of creeks seem to be producing best. The fish are willing to bite, and are doing so aggressively. If you don’t get a bite in the first few casts, move to a new area. If you have Lowrance down scan and side scan, this will make it easier by locating the fish on the screen. Initially your bite is a little deeper, but once you get the school chasing your bait, you will notice them moving more shallow, and sometimes this will create a feeding frenzy. The key to putting a lot of fish in the boat is to be willing to move from one dock and brush pile on to the next. We usually pre plan our trip ahead of time so that we have an idea of which docks and brush piles to hit first. Some tend to do better earlier in the day, and some do better later in the day. If you notice bait around your fishing spots, that is a big advantage. Always use four pound test line. Our favorite continues to be the high visibility line because it allows you to see the line jump when a fish hits. Jig colors still do not matter much this time of year as the fish are feeding well. May is one of our favorite months of the year for fishing. We have witnessed the end of the spawn of the crappie, followed by the spotted bass spawn. Enjoy fishing, and be safe on the water! Wear your life jacket; it can save your life!
