LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 6.3 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 70’s
Bass fishing on Lanier remains very good. The lake continues to come up with all the recent rain, and the water temps are in the upper 70's. This is going to sound like a broken record, but the top water bite remains dominant and we are chasing it every day, all day. To sum it up, if it walks, pops, spits, wakes, chugs, or swims, it will catch fish right now. Focus on offshore structure with cover, such as brush on humps and points, for this approach. The bite seems to be better in the middle of the day than any other time, but we have are still seeing some good morning schooling activity again this week as well, for which the top water lures have been excellent. Just throw it in the action and hang on. Wind blown points have been the best places for this action. The fluke has continued to produce well also in the same type places. Work it fast and then kill it and let it settle. Vary the cadence until you find what the fish want. The fluke can be a good option when there is no wind. Also the swimbait bite has returned and has been producing some good fish. I have been using the Sweet Herring and a Sebile. Same places as mentioned for the top water bite. The only other thing we are throwing with any consistency is a SuperSpin. We are using this bait in the same areas as we do for the top water as another option if the fish won't come up. Here are my remaining available June dates: 19, 20(PM), 21, 22, 23, 28, and 29. Father's Day is coming up! What better gift to give Dad than a fishing trip with Jimbo! This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West 404 561 2564. Contact us on our web site. www.bigfishon.com
Striper fishing is good. Not a lot has changed this week. Fishing remains “all over the place” as the lake is transitioning to summer time conditions. These transitioning conditions will continue until the lake is fully stratified. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer, a transition layer (approximately 2 foot in depth) and a deep cold water layer. The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Until the lake becomes fully stratified with the hot layer at 80 degrees and the thermocline at 25 feet the stripers are comfortable and can be caught anywhere in the water column. Consequently, shallow as well as deep water techniques will work. There is still a top water bite with a Red Fin or Chug Bug. Free line Blueback Herring is working early morning with a down rod bite developing later in the morning and afternoon. Look for the fish to be at a depth of 20 to 70 feet and over a bottom of 40 to 120 feet. It is time to get out your Lead Core line, Umbrella rigs and Ben Parker spoons as the deep water bite will only get stronger over the next several weeks. Start your search in the main lake and creek mouths from the mouth of the Chestatee River to Vann’s Tavern. The lake is 6.4 feet below full pool and the water is lightly stained on the main lake and heavily stained in the back of the creeks. The water temperature has risen to the high 70’s. This Lake Lanier Crappie report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net
Water temperature is approaching the 80’s early in the morning, but quickly rises a few degrees on a sunny day, and crappie fishing remains good. You may ask, “How significant is water temperature?” When we report a water temperature, it references the surface temperature. Fish make the necessary adjustments and move to deeper water where the temperature change is significant. Some fish move into natural timber, and some move to deeper brush piles, both those around docks or standalone brush piles. So, if you are fishing a private pond or reservoir that holds crappie, you will obviously fish the deepest part of the water. On Lake Lanier, you simply move to deeper brush piles. The crappie are currently holding on brush piles in 25 to 30 foot depths. The challenge that you will have at these depths is to feel the bite. The deeper they are, the less noticeable the bite will be. This is the reason high visibility line is important. I have switched to 2 pound test high visibility line. Both soft body and hair jigs are working equally well, and chartreuse color is producing best. One sixteenth ounce jig head is recommended to get your jig to the depth needed. Helpful tip: if you don’t get hung occasionally, you are not getting deep enough. Your downscan is a must. Early morning until about 10:00 am is the best bite. However if you want to beat the heat, night fishing is picking up under bridges, with live bait recommended. At our club meeting this month (June 29th), we will be discussing night fishing patterns. Come check us out! We meet at Hammond’s Fishing Center in Cumming at 6:00 pm. Hope to see you then!
