LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 5.6 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 80’s

Bass fishing is good. More rain this week means more water in the lake! The water came up over .5 feet last week and the water temperatures have remained fairly stable. The fishing on Lanier remains good, although it is starting to change slightly as the fish seem to be trending more toward their mid summer patterns. The top water bite is still good and as long as we don't get consistently hot temps, it should still stick around, although it won't be as consistent as we have seen it. Most days will offer periods of good top water fishing, but count on having to do some other things during some parts of the day to get bit. We have again this week been working top water and swimbaits for the majority of our catches. A chug bug, a Sammy, and a fluke have been my main choices for top water, and a Sebile for a swimbait. Focus on offshore structure with cover, such as brush on humps and points, for this approach. We are focusing on brush in 18 to 25 feet of water. For the past week, the mid morning time frame has seemed to produce the best top water action, however, there always seems to be a return of the bite at some point in the afternoon as well. When the fish are schooling, pay attention to the size of bait they are chasing. Match the size of your top water to the size of the bait on which the fish are focused. The drop shot bite continues to improve and it is proving to be a good option when the top water bite slows. I have been using the Lanier Baits offerings. Candy has seemed to again be the best color this week. Also, look for the SuperSpin bite to really improve over the next few weeks as the fish become less and less willing to come to the surface. Work this bait around points and humps with brush and vary the areas of the water column you work until you find the sweet spot. Here are my open July Dates: 12, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 22, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, and 31. Now is a great time to learn off shore fishing for mid summer bass on Lanier! Deep humps, hidden points, and ledges are a focus now. Give me a call and see what that is all about! And I'm sure we will have some fun along the way!

Striper fishing is good. I have had a number of questions on summer lake stratification this week and I thought it warranted a little more explanation. The lake is stratified and the thermocline is at 25 to 27 feet. Summer lake stratification is the process of a lake separating into three layers: a top warm layer (currently at 86 degrees), a transition layer (approximately 2 foot in depth) and a deep cold water layer currently in the mid 50 degrees). The transition layer is referred to as the thermocline. Because the Striped Bass is temperature sensitive and cannot survive in 80 degree water getting your baits down below the thermocline is critical. You should ensure you are fishing your Blueback herring at 30 to 80 feet deep. A lot of you have line counter reels which are a great tools. However, they will be off depending on how full you spool your line. To calibrate your line counter zero your reel at surface level and drop it down to 30 feet. Use you electronics to verify the actual depth. Repeat this calibration at 50 and 80 feet. You now have a good feel for your line counter accuracy. This may sound trivial but the difference of 4 or 5 feet can be the difference between getting bit and not getting bit. Down rod herring continues to be the most productive technique. However, we have had some limited success pulling umbrella rigs at 130 to 150 feet behind the boat in creek channels as well as Lead core at 7 to 8 colors. Look for the fish to be at a depth of 30 to 70 feet deep over a bottom of 40 to 120 feet. There are fish in every creek from Browns Bridge to the Dam. The lake is 5.75 feet below full pool and the water is clear on the main lake and lightly stained in the back of the creeks. The water temperature is in the low 80’s.
