The spoon bite has remained good this past week. Look in the 35 to 55 feet range for the spoon fish, but that can change any day in terms of the depth they are holding based on the bait. Look for the fish to be tighter to the timber on sunny days, and roaming more in those deep ditches on cloudy days. We have also still been working shallower rocky points with a jig and worm in the mornings and sometimes throughout the day. These slower presentations are becoming good options out in the ditches as well. We are catching some worm and jig fish in the 20 30 foot range, but I will say the presence of rock seems to be a key. The creek ditches are holding some fish now in shallower water and we have been catching some on the SuperSpin down in the ditches on some days so count that bite has officially started and ready for training! Also, with the cooling water temperatures, look for the jerk bait bite to pick up soon back in pockets. THIS is the time to learn those winter patterns ditch fishing, timber fishing, spoon fishing, It’s a great time to learn them all. I hope you will make plans to come join me. This is a great time to learn the deep timber bite with a spoon, worm, and jig, as well as the SuperSpin fishing in the ditches. Here are my open dates for December: 11, 13, 14, 17, 18, 19, 20, 28, 29, 30, and 31. Give me a call and let’s fish! Thanks to all and May God Bless!

Striper fishing good. The lake has cooled to the high 50's and the stripers are aggressively feeding. Locating large concentrations of bait and working birds has been the ticket. When you see birds diving on bait being pushed to the surface by feeding fish, resist the temptation to go roaring over with the big motor you will just spook the fish. Instead move in with your trolling motor while casting a 3/8 to 1/2 ounce buck tail jig with a small fluke trailer. Another approach is to put a medium shiner on a line with a #4 hook and a weighted bobber and cast to the feeding fish. Also pitch a herring with a number 1 or 1/0 hook.

Water temperature was in the mid-fifties earlier this week. With the cold days and nights, expect the water temps to be 50 degrees or below. Currently, fishing is good, but with the change in water temps, I expect the bite will slow and the fish will go deeper. Once they adjust, the bite should pick up. With last week’s rain, the backs of creeks are still moderately stained. If you are fishing in stained water, using darker colored jigs works better. To have a successful day, we are having to cover a lot of water until you find the right spot with schooling fish on submerged brush piles. Channel docks are also holding fish, and the water is not nearly as stained as the backs of creeks. Bobby Garland’s Mr. Crappie, and the Panfish Assassins, combined with 1/24 ounce Davis jig heads are a good choice. If you prefer it, our go to hair jig continues to be a Jiffy Jig. Because the bite has slowed, you may want to consider a change to 2 pound test line, if you are not already using it. We are catching quality fish, but 2 lb. test allows you to feel the action better and should still be sufficient for the size fish. My advice for fishing in cold weather is to always fish with a friend. Accidents can happen, and the best defense is to watch out for one another. Be safe. Wear your life jacket it can save your life.
