  • Lake Lanier Fishing Report - GA

LAKE LANIER IS 1.0 FEET OVER FULL, THE CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR THE RIVERS AND UP LAKE COVES ARE VERY STAINED. 70S

Currently the lake stands at 1.0 feet over full pool, and sits around 73 degrees surface temperature. The lake came down almost a foot from last week. The backs of the live creeks in the lower lake are slightly stained. The Main River and coves above Brown's Bridge up to Little Hall are surprisingly clear. The bass fishing on Lake Lanier remains excellent! Pretty much pick how and where you want to catch them and go after it. A spinnerbait, Keitech, fluke, and even some top water have been productive, and of course a worm. The Georgia Blade Spinnerbait on shallow rock has remained good for us this week, as has swimming a Keitech on a jig head. Shallow is the word for the fish we have been on focus on 10 feet and less. Points, humps, rocks, docks all have fish on them. A fluke has been very productive around shallow rock and cover this past week. Also, these baits will work back shallow in the creeks as well. Some days the wood in these areas is holding fish also, so make sure to make some casts to the now many pieces of flooded cover. When the fish aren't chasing, the worm on a shaky head is hard to beat. Consider downsizing your worm if the bite is tough or you are missing fish. A whacky rigged Senko is also a good option in the worm category as well. Here are my open dates remaining in May: 15, 21(PM), 22(PM), 29, 30(PM). Give me a call and let's get out and enjoy the great weather and excellent spring fishing! Also, my June dates will fill up fast if you want a top water trip, now is the time to book!

This Lake Lanier Crappie fishing report is from Dan Saknini, member of the Lanier Crappie Angler’s Club. See our club’s website, www.laniercrappieanglers.net

The lake level is a little over a foot higher than full pool. Water temps are in the low 70’s. Water is clear on the south end of the lake, and moderately stained in the middle of the lake and north. As we mentioned last week, spring weather brings out a greater number of fishermen and others enjoying the lake, so I encourage you to continue to be respectful of others on the lake. Even though the dogwoods and daffodil blooms are gone, crappie fishing remains strong. As predicted, the pattern has changed. We are launching our boats before daylight and we are getting back to the boat ramps before mid day, especially with the 80 + degree temps over the last few days. Another option is to fish late in the afternoon/early in the evening, with the bite being just as good as in the morning. We are moving around, practicing the “run and gun” method fishing as many docks as possible. It is against the law to board private docks, so when fishing, we take that into consideration and keep our boats a good distance from the docks. We have noticed a small number of fish starting to move to stand alone brush piles from the middle of the creeks to the backs of creeks. But we are still targeting river channel docks and creek channel docks where we are catching the bigger fish. I suspect some of those fish will start moving slowly to stand alone brush piles soon. Since we are targeting docks in 20 to 35 foot depths with structure, the fish tend to be deeper at first so we are using 1/24 ounce and even 1/16 ounce jig heads. Bobby Garland and Jiffy Jigs remain our “go to” jigs. When the weather is good and the fish are biting, my advice is to call a friend and Go Fish! See you on the water! Wear your life jacket it can save your life!
