Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
Associated Press - October 25, 2007 10:54 AM ET
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana Department of Natural Resources says a record-breaking longnose gar has been caught in the Wabash River.
The fish weighed 19 pounds, 4 ounces, and was nearly 55 inches from lip to tail. It was caught in southwest Indiana's Posey County on October 10th by Kevin Huber of New Harmony.
Longnose gars are primitive-looking fish with a long snout studded with sharp teeth.
Indiana's previous record longnose gar was caught in the White River in Pike County in 2004. It weighed a little over 18 pounds.
Wow , I think I will start fishing for Gar ! Why a trash fish record makes the news in mystery to me . I have caught these toothy critters fishing the river nad some backwater lake - the fight hard but are still a trash fish , no good to eat and a vious predeator .
Re: Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
That record could easily be broken if you set your sights on gar right now in the Ohio. They are everywhere, last week I'm sure I saw one bigger than that at the lower dam in Lou. Ky.'s record will be a little tougher at 40#s it was also out of the river...Maybe I'm gar fishen this week . Hmmmmm.
Re: Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
Well ,
The gar in the river are Alligator Gar and Im sure the record for them is alot more . I checked the DNR web site but all the have listed is the long nose gar so I dont know about the gator gars but like Ive said - trash fish .
Re: Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
All the gar ive ever caught out of the river are long nose gar,never seen any alligator gar in the river.Anyone else ever caught one?Gar are not trash fish,if you like a good fight,you got it with a big gar.Just cause you cant eat them or there not the great bass doesnt make them trash.Me and a buddy of mine caught them all night one night on crankbaits and had a blast.You couldnt tell me that night that wasnt a sport fish.Just my opinion though,i like the pull of any big fish on my line.Sure its not what im going after but it beats the heck out of catching a skipjack.

I'm just stating what the Ky.digest said the record for longnose gar is and where it was caught! It is an old record I believe 1956? And I'm with John [fisheater] on this one ,they are a blast to catch. Does the Wabash river run into the Ohio?
Re: Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
Opps !
I checked with Google and you are right , the Ohio has Long Nose Gar in it . Alligator gar are down south , the world record being 279lbs ! Mmm , this crow is tough . :}

Re: Record-breaking fish caught in Posey County
