Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
I was talking to Prowler Saturday about the tourney. He told me the Big East teams would be in trouble if the ref's called a tight game. The reason being is he said most of thier conference games were played where the ref's let them play.
I know a lot of the UK games were played we didn't have a lot of foul trouble.
How did some of your teams fair in the foul aspect?
And what do you think about how your conference games were called?
Will it make a difference for your conference in the tourney?

Re: Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
Kentucky as a whole does not foul much. MKG asking to let Miller start against Vandy to help Miller get into the flow since he was scoreless the first 2 games helped and hurt. Miller was the leading scorer but MKG only played 18 minutes because of foul trouble and never got into the flow of the game himself. Kentucky doesnt necessarily need all 7 of their rotation to play the absolute best they can to win but back to back goose eggs by Miller can't happen either.
The team that got hosed by the refs was NC State against North Carolina in the ACC semis. Game was tied and UNC player drives to the left of the lane while NCST player is moving with him and has established position but still moving the same direction when UNC player lowers shoulder into him, knocking him down, then UNC player hits the winning shot. It was either a charge or a block but the ref swallowed the whistle and called nothing. It was a charge, no doubt. Jay Bilas talked about the definition of the charge block in the rule book. Since the State player had established position and was moving with the offensive guy then he does not have to have his feet set like most people think. Mark Gottfried, ex Alabama coach and current NCST coach, was livid and the camera caught him saying some choice 4 letter words to the official. If that play was the first 12 seconds of the game a foul would have been called, the last 12 seconds a no call. There was a ref standing less than 15 feet away looking straight at it when it happened.
Re: Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
Big 10 and Big East are not finesse conferences. If it's a tightly called game some folks could get in foul trouble early. We'll see how it plays out. South Florida for example could brutalize Cal and then Temple and then Michigan if the refs let them play or they could get hammered by Cal at the free throw line in the play in game. Hopefully Cincy will be allowed to mug Texas and send them home.
Billy UK tip is at 6:50pm get that wagner power painter 10000 cranked up!
Re: Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
Good points, yes the Big East plays rough always have. The Big 10 I think is actually worse. The games I've watched this year played in the Big 10 looked more like football then basketball.
That said though, most teams can play both ways if they can shut it off mentally. In the past Louisville has done pretty well with this, but with this team, Who knows, lol...
Re: Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
Spot on by both of you about the Big 10 and big east. The ref's let them play. I think they tighten it up some in the NCAA but not as much as what some think. If they let the guards play out front, I like Louisville's chances against a lot of teams because Siva and Russ are lightning quick.
The officiating that rdives me crazy the most is when they let you punch someone in the mouth under the goal, but call you for breathing in someones ear above the top of the key.

AMEN to that! Hand on a hip 40 feet from basket gets a whistle. Cross body check on a lay-up is good defense. The other thing that absolutely drives me ape-s@#t crazy is how the NBA refs (and I don't watch much reg. season) wait to see if the "foul" has influenced the play. Guy gets mugged, ball goes in, no foul. Guy gets mugged, misses shot, whistle blows as the other team starts fast-break. Or the reach in foul where the player is clearly mauled but the whistle only comes if it results in a change of possession. Unfortunately, I am seeing this slowly creep into college ball also......

Re: Whistles in the NCAA Tourney
The crap that really drives me crazy is when the refs call something stupid on one end then feel they have to make up for it on the other end...A guy will make a clean block and get a foul called on him, refs realize it after hes blown his whistle, call some ticky tack crap at the other end to get a guy who had nothing to do with the play in foul trouble...drives me frickin insane

Steven I see this constantly, it's insane...
I mean they do it and everybody knows it and the commentators call it ''The makeup call''. Call the thing right, if you miss one don't make up something to even out the game...
