Alright, see you in October..... I don't like to catch fish.
My friend tells me they are not in the jumps just yet but downrigging is very productive. I will be down the latter part of September.
They should be in the jumps by then , the poker run will mess up fishing this weekend.
Back to our conversation on August jumps and Striper fishing overall I have caught as many Stripers in August as October. It's up to the fish to do want they are doing and we just have to work with the activity thaey give us.
Night fishing is good this time of year, alewives would be great but shiners on planer boards if you know where to go at night are very productive. One of my favorite night spots is on the main lake and you can see the lights at the Jamestown Marina. No more info available LOL......
Good Luck Guys and thanks for the great posts.
Striperjoe
It was raining early in the morning last Sunday Labor Day weekend so I woosed out and went back to sleep. I went out about two in the afternoon looking for some friends to have refreshments with but could not find them. I happen to have some shiners on hand so about 3 o'clock I started looking around for fish in deep water down by Indian. Shortly thereafter I found a cluster of fish hanging near the bottom. Between jet skis and cruisers flying by I dropped two shiners down to the bottom and reeled up a couple turns. I immediately got two fish on lost them. Dropped two more down and netted two fish. Who would have thought. Bright sun, holiday weekend. I guess when they are that deep it doesn't matter what's going on up top.
They were in a fairly small area and I had Marked the spot on the GPS. However, it's a little difficult to get back to that spot when you are trolling at less than a mile an hour and the wind is pushing the boat in one direction (gps shows that direction) and the boat is pointed in another direction. Makes it hard to know which direction to go to get back to the dot on the chart. Without a compass handy I can't tell which way to go and land references aren't that accurate in what is basically open water.
Tonight I stumbled upon the old floating crappie marker with the string that unwinds and lead that goes to the bottom and put that back on the boat for next time. Going to give that a try next time. It might be a lot simpler for marking fish locations.
If anybody knows how to do this at bait pulling speed with the GPS please post the answer.
No say it ain't so, downrigging is the most productive right now.............See original post Bob, LOL....
OMG you crack me up. Nobody said there ain't plenty of different ways to boat fish at any one time of the year. Yep, I agree with rigging. Yep, I agree with sitting on a deep school. Yep, you can get fish with boards this time of year near the banks and on the flats. And yep....you can stumble into a jumps. OMG, simple minds require all or nothing propositions I guess.
This will probably confuse the heck out of a mind that seems it's an all or nothing event, but one simply adjusts, adapts, and overcomes....and that includes capitalizing on fish that surface even though they don't have your expressed permission to do so. I promise you, the next time I hit an August jumps, I'm going to scold ever fish I hook up on a redfin or a spook. Naught undisciplined fish.....shame on them.
the absolute best time to catch stripers in the "jumps" is when they are "jumping". i do not want that to sound like a smart@XX answer but..... its the truth. predicting when stripers will jump is a mere guess. i have been wrong for the last 3 weeks because there has been a TON of bait on the surface at low light and ZERO jumps. ive never been so worried about the time of year, the water temp etc etc....there is no reason for stripers to feed on the surface if the bait isnt near or at the surface.

My bad.....sorry man.
striperjoe,
as of this morning still no jumps, fish are still very deep. still alot of big pods os very small bait on / near the surface but the kys have even quit busting them.
just as many have correctly stated that stripers over the years have jumped well in many different months, conversely i can remmeber at least a couple years where they didnt hardly jump at all. keep in mind things have changed somewhat from what they used to be. once upon a time you could throw a dart at any date on the calendar in may/june and say with confidence "i am going to bust their @$$ tonight on topwater" !!! now you might as well just stay home and throw darts for what night fishing has become lately.
it will probabaly still happen, but if these last 2/3 weeks are any indication its not starting off well. we will see what happens when the nights cool down.

Thanks Jeff...............nice report
I saw striper jumps yesterday evening about an hour and half before dark I swear. Only bad thing is they were baby striped bass.......... At mouth of channel of Burnside island ramp on the point AKA my back door they were jumping in schools feeding on small minnows. I don't know if the babies get released there or not but I have seen them many times and cast netted them a while back to see what they are and they are a bunch of baby stripers. Called my wife all excited and told her I caught 12 stripers at once, she didn't believe me till I sent her the pic of it in which she replied "that's embarrassing".
Anybody know if they release baby stripers out of Burnside or do they just school up there? They are little I would say about 4" long
