Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
So now they're trying a new "cut and cap" idea, which is already not working well, and to me seems like it's more likely to make things worse than anything. Does anybody remember when this first happened, they talked about drilling a new well next to the existing one, then angling it over into the blown well, then injecting cement to seal it? I seem to remember them saying this would be a slam-dunk, and would definitely work, only problem being it would take months, perhaps until August. I remember thinking at the time they should go ahead and start, just in case, and for some reason I thought they were going to go ahead and do it. But I haven't heard anything about it lately. Are they still trying this? I sure as hell haven't heard any better ideas.
They are drilling relief wells as we speak.
What really honks me off is that they are still putting profits and potential profits ahead of GETTING IT SEALED.
Destroy the wellhead, USE THERMITE, or whatever else you need to SEAL this MFER.....be done with it.
BP doesn't want to do that because they stand to lose Billions in potential revenues. The cleanup effort will cost significantly LESS, and they don't give a CRAP about our land.......PERIOD.

Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
Geo, you are so far off base that I know it would be a waste of time to try to explain it to you, but I will say that if you think they are protecting ONE WELL for its revenues over what it will cost for the clean up you realy have no idea what you are talking about.

"Relief Wells," yeah, that's the term! Googled those, and found that yes, they are in fact in progress: http://www.deepwaterhorizonresponse.com/go/doc/2931/575179/
Destroying the wellhead is a VERY bad idea. That stands a better chance of making it impossible to EVER stop the flow of oil, than of actually stopping it. At this point, I think the relief wells are our best hope.
Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
When this ordal first started...it made me sad, disgustingly sad.
Fast forward 40+ days later and it still ain't fixed. My sadness has gone away though...I'm not sad about the situation anymore....now I'm pretty much fed up, ticked off, you name it!
If BP were an individual and I a judge, I'd be handing down a death sentence TODAY! I wouldn't ask them what they want to eat or anything else, they could leave what little belongings they have right there on the bench. Gentlemen, escort this idiot to the Gas Chamber NOW! Or, how about we put him in the Gas Chamber, seal it shut and fill it with Oil and watch him squirm for a bit before he drowns in his own foolishness?
Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
Yeah this whole ordeal really exposed the inability to enforce rules or safety measures or maybe it's the lack of them.
So I guess what we are finding out is that for all these years oil companies have been drilling without a plan for an explosion and a broken pipe/well like this? So what if it's 5000 feet down? They have a means of getting there and it just seems that they were allowed to drill without the proper safety measures in place.
If I were in charge of any oil rig I would be performing all my preventive maintenance checks and services yesterday!! I would bet more safety measures are coming too.....

This will really piss you off:
And to those worried restaurateurs facing rising prices for shrimp and oysters? In the words of fellow BP rep Randy Prescott: “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp.”

Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
Grumpy if George is so off base, I tend to agree with him. Maybe you should enlighten us both.
If you are saying money and greed have nothing to do with this one taking so long I think you are wrong.
Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
Mark, if money and greed were the end purpose, the spill would have been contained in two or three days. Even Obama has admitted that BP is doing everything it can to end the gusher. This thing is an accident of the worst kind because the break/problem came in the pipe under all of the safety mechenisms that were in place to keep the oil from espcaping in the event of a breakdown. If anyone really thinks BP is profiting from this, you have to be nuts. And, if you think that all that has to be done is drop a nuke on the wellhead, or some other such hair-brained idea, to **** it up, but it is not being doine because BP doesn't want to destroy the well, is just as crazy. If that well were capped and then brought back into service, it could produce for a hundred years and never pay for the damage that BP is going to have to pay out.
The good thing about it is, that maybe the oil companies will develope the technology to contain future spills better.

After reading the article and then the comments following the story, my gut tells me this quote was taken out of context. The comments are just about as bad as the implied context of the quote.
Re: Stopping the Oil Spill
I was just watching a short video from a Louisanna restaurant owner who was talking about how this oil spill is negatively affecting the fishing trade and the tourist industry in their area. Good point as we have looked how it negatively affected the environment and watching to see if they will ever be able to cap that well. Its day 45 now and no hope in sight. Something just dawned on me and what if they can never cap it. Is the Gulf of Mexico going to turn into one big black lake of oil. Will the towns and cities along the America gulf coast go out of business and all become ghost towns? It is scary to think this may happen. Again, I dont understand why all the well educated and experienced engineers for BP can not cap this well. I really dont understand.:(
