What would you do to help Cumberland?

OK, lets start the ball rolling.
What would your club or group or your company be willing to donate to help improve habitat on Lake Cumberland. This thread is for IDEAS and Donation Ideas ONLY. It is set up to give Fish and Wildlife an idea of what fishermen in the state are willing to do for Bass, Crappie, Bluegill, etc on Lake Cumberland.
I will be sending the list to Fish and Wildlife at the end of the month.

Thumbs up Re: What would you do to help Cumberland?

I don't belong to any clubs or groups that would help, and neither would my employer, but I personally would be willing to donate:

    1) Time.
    2) Elbow grease.
    3) The use of my modest little 14' runabout.

Hey Jim I bet if they tell us what they need and want, that they will get it. If its cash the sooner they let us know the more we can raise. If its sweat equitiy if they let us know in advance I bet they find they get plenty of help.

My time and labor. Many many times during low water times I have picked up alot of trash and discarded it from the lake. Might even help with some money if Im absolutely sure it's going for what it's intended for.

I agree. If they can give us an idea of what would be needed for various species, we could better determine where we could do the most help. You might find a few bass clubs that would pitch in for those things that would be most useful for the bass, striper clubs for stripers, trout clubs for the tailwater area, and recreational anglers who would like to help out their prefered species.

Lake Cumberland needs cover, bad. Not sure if stick beds would work here like Ky or Barkley but maybe planting vegetation that will grow while its down would help. Buck brush type or willow that may die after the lake is returned to normal pool but would provide cover for several years would help.

My guess is the State Fish and Game folks could really help in telling us how they prepare for a new lake with brush piles, clean up, etc.? This is a golden opportunity for those of us who want to help improve the fishing to volunteer. Just let us know what we can do to help. I recently retired and have time to help any way I can.

This is something I would be very interested in. What would the Fish and Wildlife recomend? I also would like to see the habitat for the fishery improve. I willing to do my part.

I don't fish cumberland but I have an idea on how to build cover if they would let people to that. Think PVC pipe trees as new cover for bass and crappie.

Crappie Condoes can be made from other materials but PVC pipe will last forever and the fish hooks don't get caught up in the pvc like they do in real wood.

Brush piles could also be added if the lake needs more cover and structural elements.

Also while the lake is down so far it might be nice to go out along the dry areas and collect all the old fishing line, sinkers, baits and other trash and haul it to the dump somewhere. A good job for the boyscouts and other civic organizations of the area.

I would think that by the time the work gets finished and the lake goes back to normal it will be a completely different lake. Nature will provide grasses and new trees etc.. for the entire lake all new cover. That to me would give Cumberland a revitalization that lakes like this dream about. In 10 years it may be the best fishery in the state, similar to what KY Lake went through in the early 90's.

All of the flats upstream from pulaski park on fishing creek could be planted with cyprus or willows. The first thing that i would ask, are we allowed to do it? It is usually always shallow there unless the lake is at full pool and the crappie like that place even with the limited cover, It would be a great nursery for crappie and bass if there were more cover. Or again are we allowed to feed the beavers that were stocked?
