    Johnson motor overheating

I have a 94 johnson 115 on my boat. The water temp is shooting up at full throttle and its peein, but the stream is a little weak. I tried Flomax to no avail. HA HA I was told that it is probably the water pump by a local guy at the lake by me. He also said it could be a head gasket. Now I am hoping and praying that it is only the pump. What do you guys think it is and is it a really hard one to fix myself with a little help or should I just break down and take it to the local boat repair and pay them out the Yin Yang to get it fixed?? If so, where do you guys suggest, I live in Louisville. Any and all help is appreciated!!!!!!!!

when was the last time your impellar was changed? If you fish the river much you can get a lot of silt from those shallow ramps up in there and if the boat sits for a few weeks that can dry can form solid dirt blocking the flow path. I replace the impeller every two years, and had to change it once out of the rotation due to silt build up. Its a not complicated job IF YOU KNOW what you are doing, it takes a few special tools, one imparticular is a long, flexible screwdriver. I would suggest just taking it to a mechanic.

well then I would say its time for a new impeller, they are made of rubber and dryrot just like anything else. Shouldn't cost over $100 for repair bill and parts. Not sure on marines there around the ville though

Thermostat could be stuck or it may be clogged. They are located on the top of the block and have a wire coming out of each one . Loosen 4 bolts (I think ) and remove the cover. They may just have debris around them

    Re: Johnson motor overheating

Anybody know of a good place to take my boat to get it fixed down by Rough? I am headed down this weekend and thought I just may try and get it fixed there. Our cabin is up by North Fork. SO if anybody knows a good place to go, (besides Paulies, they said 5-6 weeks) please enlighten me!! I would LOVE to get it fixed this weekend or next week so I can fish next weekend.

    do it your self.
    1. need to unhook the gear shift rod (long screwdriver)
    2. remove all bolts holding the foot
6 are on the sides 1 in the middle and one under the the torque skeg.
    3. should drop right out but may stick in the splines (old grease)
    4. screwdriver or small socket to remove the top of the pump housing (4 screws)
    5. remove from lower unit. Take picture or make sketch of which way the implller is turning and install the new one the same way.

    6. when replacing the lower unit on th motot make sure the ater tube slides in the pump housing.

it's not a hard job. If you have tools then you can do it. If you don't own tools then don't even try.

    Re: Johnson motor overheating

i did my cousins in less than an hour,i have done a few though, buy a book and take your time..by the way the cheapest he found in lou. was around $200 and the soonest was 2 weeks.
if it's been that long go ahead and replace it to be safe, test the t-stats by putting them in a pan of water on the stove and watch to make sure they open.
