I am wanting to try trolling for walleye this summer on cumberland. any help appreciated as I have never done this.
Deep running fire tiger crankbaits do great for me.
What speeds do you use 2mph. Do you troll with your main engine or trolling motor?
The bigger fish will stay below the 65 degree depth until september at about turnover, at that time you can still catch smaller fish down to 60 feet. trolling cranks does not work that well for cumberland for numbers of fish the last PWT and NAWA tournaments have proved that, And I would agree it is easy but not productive for cumberland as there is no open water forage for walleye with the striper population, the walleye are fixed to the bank and structure.Meat rules(crawlers, leeches, and shad if you can get um)
Thanks to all that replied. Going to try the trolling but have heard from several folks that crawlers are best.
tried for 2 hrs today on upper end main lake and then in pitman creek. no takers but did graph what i believe were walleyes around bait in 20'-25' water off a point in pitman ck. went over them x3 with no takers and let another fella trolling give em a shot.
Well ya can call me a liar if ya want but I do pretty **** good trolling for walleye on Cumberland. 3 people in the boat and we all usually bring home a limit to eat. At least I think I am on Cumberland.
By no means will i say that you are a liar, and then again i will not say that trolling will not produce fish that is why it is banned for bass tournaments, tell us how?
We troll with an 18 ft bass boat that has a 150 mercury on it. Trim the motor down as much as possible and put it in gear with no acceleration. See we just good ole boys, we dont have all that electronic stuff just a graph and a flasher to keep the same depth that we are catching fish in. Any crankbait that is not to fat that runs deep like 20+ ft and charteuse color on say maybe 8 to 10 lb test. Be ready to loose some baits. We also have a friend that lives on Cumberland that catchs alot of striper and walleye there and lucky for us he is just a phone call away. He is our best piece of electronic equipment, lol. No I have not a clue what speed we are goin. We just catch fish. As for where to go thats our friends secret spots so I am tight mouthed on that one. Hope this helps ya Good Luck.
Beagley's walleye shad in bone color with orange belly is hot right now. Pro Bass in Bronston is loaded up with them as this bait/color isn't a big secret. people can and do catch em long line trolling. i'd concentrate on main lake flats.
I have some good luck at night in flats using reef runners in 22 ft of water and try to keep my speed at (or around) 2.0 mph.
Deep jigs with live bait are almost a sure bet after dark.
They are on the bite now!
Good luck,
RiverLew
