    Question Hooks for swimbaits?

I was wondering if there is a specific hook for swimbaits? I'm talking about the ones that are molded soft plastic with no hooks in them yet, like most soft plastic lures. They are the 5 inch and 3.5 inch models. Are they heavy enough to not require a weighted hook? Additional nose weight needed? Jighead needed? I just don't know...Thanks!

I myself have just starting to use them. I have been using jig heads, but that's just a guess.Got to use them very late in year and didn't get to try them that much.

I have seen them rigged on the "frog" style hooks. Where they screw into a srping by the eye of the hook. The one I saw like that was using a weighted hook. I haven't fished one though.

when i used to troll them at cumberland for stripers we used 1\2 oz ball leadheads,i would guess you could use football or what ever.i use 1\8 with the little sassy shad for crappie and whites.

I was only thinking about the basstrix style when I wrote earlier (with the head molded in the plastic). I have also seen some that were molded and looked like the head was choped off for a jighead. Yamamoto is making one now like that, along with a nice minnow head/jig head that looks pretty cool.

I was at Backwaters Thrusday, just looking around, and on the end of the first aisle along with their nice selection of swimbaits, they also have the weighted hooks with the small screw-in attachment to attach to the swimbait. I think the weights vary in size from 1/8 to 3/16 and are reasonable priced.

i use jig heads, swim bait heads (fancy jighead basically) and weighted EWG style hooks. use the swim bait/jig head for open water fishing with little to no cover and the weighted EWG type for fishing in and around cover esp when in shallow water. hope this helps!

    Re: Hooks for swimbaits?

This is an earlier post of mine about the basstrix style swimbaits,5 inch size, hope this helps:
The hooks are Owner wide gap plus size 6/0 and the weights are Rubber core sinkers size 1/8 oz.To rig them:take the eye of the hook through the chin of the bait till the eye sticks out of the mouth of the bait. Was told once you tie it on to keep the eye on the outside. Then you just rig it weedless like you would a fluke.Take the rubber core sinker and open it with a screwdriver and put it on the hook about a 1/4 in from where it comes out of the chin.He said without the weight it will roll like crazy. Also the bait is very soft and will not hold up well with out some super glue or ? so if these work as well as i hope they wont last long.I have not tried this and fished it yet, just relaying what i know so far.
