My first Bass Tourney, thanks to someone on here!!

Many of you responded to my request for assistance with my boys and getting them the poles I needed to take them out fishing, and I THANK YOU greatly. I was reading the post about the gentleman not thanking them for doing something VERY nice for them in a tourney and I thought, "I don't wanna be that person". So, with this in mind I would like to thank Chuck Isreal for the kindness he showed me this weekend. He took me with him to the KY Bass Tourney in Herrington as his non-boater. I had a BLAST (even though I did not get as much as a nibble . I have never fished for bass before and quickly realized that the equipment, which I had from the mid 90's, was horrible for this incredibly intriguing sport. I am hooked, no pun intended, and will definately try it again when I can get a few lures and a decent "bait casting rod" is it called?
Anyway, I wanted to thank Chuck for everything from the ride down to the ride home, he covered it all so I could go and enjoy a day of fun trying something new for myself!! I cannot ever repay all this site has done for me, and my family, but rest assured I will try over the next few years to help others when I can as I have been helped. Thanks again Chuck!!
BTW, anyone have any suggestions on how to learn to cast one of those god awful contraptions??

I learned too cast them its not that hard, its all in how you adjust the anti backlash.I'm a spining reel man but have learned baitcast now.My partner was a closed face reel man till i talked him in too a baitcast,he don't like spining reels at all.He never caught fist till he started fishing with me 3yrs ago.Now he gets the big 1s from the back of my boat and we are leading open points in USABassin. Now if he will ever learn how too throw other than side arm so i don't have too duck maybe i will start getting the big 1s from the front{lol} its 2 too my 1 for BF in our club.Hav'nt got BF in USABassin yet but know it will come someday.Terry

The guy I fished with this weekend has been fishing those for about 5 years and his percision was incredible. I just need to get one and hit the front yard I guess. When I get one I am going to set up rings in the yard and try casting it in various manners (low for under trees, specific distances, ect). It may be easy once you learn it, but it looked pretty challenging to me

Glad you had a good time with it. We hope you'll join us at Barkley in a few weeks for the next KBFN qualifier. Barkley in May can be absolutely incredible.

If you're worried about your equipment, you'd be welcome to use some of mine at Barkley. I take my boat to the KBFN qualifiers, but don't actually fish in the tournaments.

With my first baitcaster (Ambassador 5500 in 1974) came a booklet with instructions for setting the tension knob and directions for casting properly. Followed the instructions and have not had a problem. So, I recommend reading the booklet that comes with your new reel.

Man that takes me back, Lee!

I was 12 in 1974 and one weekend when my dad was out of town my brother and I stole his baitcasting rod that had an Ambassaror 5500 on it and took it out to Elkhorn Creek so we could learn how to throw it.

Dad had showed us how to set the tension knob. He said it was set perfect when your bait would freespool fall about a foot from the end of your rod, then stop.

We put a nice and heavy Lazy Ike on so it would be easy to cast and got in a deep pool. Couple hours and 29,898 backlashes later, we could call ourselves novices. We actually caught a fish or two as well.

Dad never figured out what happened to all the line on his favorite reel.

    Chuck,

As payback for your kindness, I am going to get you some "typing" lessons with my first paycheck (whenever that is . I know you love the "hunt and peck" style, but its time to graduate as young as you are, to the "no-look" style. Thanks again brother.
