I just bought a Garmin E-Trex Venture HC and while I am still learning how to use it so far I have been pleased with it.

Buy anything but a Garmin. I got a high end hand held unit 4 years ago and have NEVER been satisfied with it since. One minute 10 of 12 satelites drift 10 feet and lose all reception. Laurel Lake last tuesday night, pea soup fog and I never lose reception, the next day on high blue skies and I am checking spots and could not get one single satelite to pickup. Absolute the worst purchase of my fishing accessory life.

    Garmin GPSMAP 76
It is a discontinued model you can still find on the internet. I got one around Xmas for 99.00. Has built in base map and can load better maps. I use fishing hot spots but also discontinued. The Inland Lakes map is the repalcement. It is a marine handheld. It is waterproof and floats. I bought mine from edgegps but they have raised the price.

I've got an older Lowrance globle map 100 if you just wanting to get started with hand held units. It doesn't have the mapping function of the newer H20 but a very nice unit. Let me know if thinking about it, we can see if we can work something out.

It is amazing that people can have so many different and divergent opinions of the same Company and products. Many years ago I bought a Garmin Street Pilot and really liked it. Long story short, I have been so satisfied with Garmin, and especially with the couple of times I have needed their customer service, that now all of my fishing and navigation products are Garmin. Absolutely the best products I have ever used.
