mixing oil and gas

I have been thinking about getting rid of the direct oiler/pump and just mixing the gas with oil. I've had 2 friends who wiped out motors because the oil pump quit working and they didn't know until it was too late. But I'm still kinda leery about it, has anyone tried it before or have heard anyone who regretted doing it? No problems with my motor just thinking about prevention but you know if it's not broke.....

I had a top bearing go out in my 175hp evinrude, 2yrs ago my mechanic at prizer point, Brian said it was not oil pump related. however he said that at my boats age, it's a 96 that since we put a new powerhead on it, he would unhook the oil injection just in case.

He said the evinrude injectors are very good and they do have warning alarms, but the alarm goes off when the oil stops. Not if it's just injecting at 50% or 25%. so anyway we unhooked it and no problems or regrets. when I mix the oil I know it's in there. it's supposed to be 50:1. I mix it at 48:1 which is 1 quart to 12 gallons of gas

How bad is the smoke? FYI mine is a 1995 mariner 115

I've not tried it. Friend of mine just had 1995 200hp Merc powerhead replaced plus new tac. $7,000. I blew a 175 Johnson no warning. I use Penzoil Synthetic in my 175 Merc Opti Max and do not mix. The computer SHOULD send out a warning or reduce rpm's accordingly. Wanna buy a bridge....

forgive my ignorance, I've only had a boat for about 2 years now but is the powerhead damage because of no oil getting to the motor? This is starting to sway me already. Got a quote from a place in Louisville for about $100 and he will warranty his work in writing.

that's right I did forget about the varying oil useage d/t rpm's and such. The only time I notice smoke is at initial start up. My breakdown was more from timing set too high by previous owner and I didn't know it. My mechanic was amazed that it ran for 4 yrs set that high. So hopefully my new powerhead will last 20 yrs set right.

I had 1 of the first injected 140hp johnsons made in 83 after blowing a piston because of oiling probs I had the system removed and mixed my own. My nephew now has that boat and still runs great. About 4 years ago the 93 150 mariner on my boat now had the gear that runs the injecter pump go out. They said around $2000 to replace it or $150 to remove the system and mix my own. Been mixing that 1 for the last 4 years now with no probs.

i have a '93 Johnson 60hp. I bypassed the VRO (oil pump) last year because the pump was not working properly, actually pumping too much oil (smoke monster). anyhow, i found instructions online. it was very easy to do and seems to have worked very well for me. i can point you to some instructions if you need them.

I have a late 80's Merc 150. Back then it seemed all the Mercs had their oil pump fail and blow-up. We bought this one after it blew and was rebuilt without the oil injection. I have mixed 50 to 1 ever since and had no oil issue.

It is smokey at idle but not at any other RPM.

Click on OIL INJECTION down on the right hand side. There's more information there pertinent to your specific engine and how to bypass the vro than you can shake a stick at. Good reading. That site is chocked full of good 'how-tos'. Let me know if i can help any further.

I have heard that yammy owners are o.k. if there oiler messes up it shoots straight oil and floods the motor
