Several reasons come into play here sometimes Don. In Louisville's case it was for football. The Big East is a BCS school and can contend for a National title, they had virtually no shot at all at that in conference USA. Also Pitino had lobbied for this since his arrival because he wanted to coach again in what he feels is the premeir league in college basketball.
