I hear ya skeeter, I liked Tubby to, thought he did a good job. Check back though and I'll think you'll find Tubby was run out of town bigtime. The UK brass can put whatever kinda spin on it they want, but Orlando had no intentions of leaving until Mitch Barnyard and Lee Todd layed the smack down on him.i dont think tubby was fired. if he was why was it such a surprise to everyone when he was at the airport leaving for the gophers? i think maybe the meeting with the athletic director didnt go to well and is why he may have quit. i just dont remember him being fired. if he was then maybe the A.D. should have gone with him for not having a back-up plan in place. like i said before i could be wrong and im going to look back to see if tubby was in fact let go. and for the record i was not a tubby basher.
I was just trying to add to this forum.I heard something on a national program and thought it would be appropriate to add to this post. I am not from Kentucky and could care less if the red team or the blue team wins or loses. I agree that he is a great coach and gets results where ever he goes, except with the Celtics. But I agree with DJD that he is a business man first.
Funny this is brought up. Jus thtis morning my dad in Alabama said he had heard people talking about Alabama (who is still looking for a coach) go after Pitino. I'm a big Alabama fan but I don't see him going to a program where basketball will ALWAYS be second to football.
It was in a sports business journal last year. It was based on total revenue after the budgets is met. Pat Forde mentioned it in an ESPN.com column and on Fox Sports radion on weekends they have a one hour sports business show and it was mentioned there as well. I will see if I can find the info.
Moneyball with Chirs Moore and Rick Horrow(sp). I'd love to have Horrow's job! He's pretty factual and always on the golf course. It was in a sports business journal last year. Tom Jurich has accomplished this at almost every stop he has been, the man is money. It was in a sports business journal last year. It was based on total revenue after the budgets is met. Needs to fix the football issue though,......badly!
Whats the talk around L-ville? Any credible talk of him leaving? Anyone getting nervous over there?![]()
mhall,
i found this column looking back on tubby. tubby was still the coach at uk when he boarded the plane to sign as the gophers new coach. i searched tubby smith on the msn internet search. this is the site i went to sports.espn.go.com/espn/columns/story?columnist=forde_pat&id=2809850&SportCat=ncb i dont know how to set up a link. i do good just turning the computer on. not wanting to start a debate with you but just wanted to share the results of my research. later
Skeeter, I shouldn't have wrote he was fired, because BASICALLY or LITTERALLY he wasn't. All that being said beleive me friend life was hard on the Tubster, he was getting brow beat daily by everybody, and the University did buy out his remaining contract and ask him to depart. It was made very clear to Orlando Tubby Smith that his tenure as head basketball coach had run it's course by the Alumni, the fans, the head honcho's at the University and so on.mhall,

When Denny Crum left Louisville he was allowed to do so with grace and dignity and a BIG paycheck, but really it wasn't his choice it was a choice layed out for him kinda like Tubby.
It's one of those would you like to go out in your own terms fat and happy or would you like this to be a big stink and have egg on your face. If Tubby would have kicked and screamed he would have been terminated and publically embarrased.
i guess leaving by choice is better than being fired and that was probably going to be the next step taken. alot of the TRUE BLUE FANS had already fired tubby so he left to go where he could be appreciated and feel the love again, not fair to his supporters but totally understandable. glad to see him appreciated and successful at the same time.
