top water rod

What rod do you use for top water fishing, action and length. Pop'rs ,prop baits, spooks etc.

Me personally i like a 6'6" Medium light spinning outfit, a 2500 size spinning reel and I use 20# braid (8 # mono diameter). I feel like the spinning rod helps me work the baits more effectively with better action. The braid floats and gives me no stretch, so I can hook up on long casts. The limberness of the rod also helps the fish stay hooked up with a mouth full of trebles. Its Just a matter of what you feel comfortable with.

If I don't have to make long casts, I love a 5.5' medium action pistol grip. Especially for an action-intensive bait like a spook, as opposed to a buzzbait.

I rely on a 6 to 6'6" spinning rod with medium power and fast action. Mono is the only way to go due to stretch with a flourocarbon leader. The flourocarbon leader floats and the stretch in the mono will keep many more fish hooked up without pulling trebles out from either setting the hook too fast or the fish jumping alot. I tried braid, but with no stretch I missed many more fish due to pulling the lure away from them before they have time to get it into their mouths-especially with buzzbaits.

I use a 6'6" Fenwick Medium Spinning with Pflueger President and mono. Mono keeps the head up on a Pop R and allows the fish time to inhale it. I agree with the guy on the braid as I lost too many fish. I have killed the bass this year on a little silver Pop R with the black lines. Throw it, let the ripples die, twitch it a time or time, get the slack out, wait a few second, twitch and reel and stop, etc, etc. Most of my hits have come right after I stopped. I caught 6 consecutive fish at Taylorsville on one main lake point two weeks ago right at sunrise. Had a ball until the sun got up.

Fluro sinks alright, its a pain to use on topwater stick with mono. The best topwater fishin is in clear water so i want to make long casts and i actually use a 7'6ft. crankin stick, i want that give that a crankbait rod has so the hooks dont rip out buuut ive talked to people who'd rather use a rod with more backbone to get more control over the action of the bait. i use medium heavy and dont see a problem with it but for an even longer you can use a medium action
