    Department of Energy

Does anybody out there have any memory of the MAIN reason given for the establishment of the DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY during the Carter Administration? Anybody? Anything? No?

    Didn't think so.

Bottom line . . we've spent several hundred billion dollars in support of an agency the reason for which not one person who reads this can remember.

Ready? It was very simple, and at the time everybody thought it very appropriate.

The Department of Energy was instituted 8-04-1977 TO LESSEN OUR DEPENDENCE ON FOREIGN OIL!!

    HEY, PRETTY EFFICIENT, HUH?

AND NOW IT'S 2009, 32 YEARS LATER, AND THE BUDGET FOR THIS NECESSARY DEPARTMENT IS AT $24.2 BILLION A YEAR, THEY HAVE 16,000 FEDERAL EMPLOYEES, AND APPROXIMATELY 100,000 CONTRACT EMPLOYEES AND LOOK AT THE JOB THEY HAVE DONE!

THIS IS WHERE YOU SLAP YOUR FOREHEAD AND SAY 'WHAT WAS I THINKING?

Ah yes, good ole bureaucracy. And now we are going to turn the Banking system over to them? And the automobile industry? And the Health Care Industry? And who knows what else by the time they are done?

    Re: Department of Energy

I agree,we have allowed our leadership to turn into something that was never intended and most of it is not needed,I like to see a complete list of every govt agency, cost to run such agency, and what they have actually accomplished since inception.
Taxed to death for what? Obama gets his way,we will all be paying more for every utility,at the pump, and penalized for living in the country where you drive some miles to work.

    Re: Department of Energy

    Hey Grumpy,

You did not give anyone a chance to answer!! I did know that. The fact is that the fossil fuel industry, coal AND Oil, are the biggest lobby in Washington.

For instance, did you know the technology exists for a very simple way to relieve one of our biggest dependencies on oil? In high school physics class, in the 70's, we did an experiment to take distilled water, seperate the hydrogen and oxygen molecules, through electrolis, and then collect the hydrogen molecule.

So what does this mean? We could power all our vehicles, cars, trucks, and boats using hydrogen for our fuel. There already exists hydrogen powered cars. The establishment says that it cost 100's of thousands of dollars to make a hydrogen car. Why? All you have to do is take out the engine, the gas tank, and replace them with the appropriate hydrogen fuel storage and burning devices.

So right now it is expensive, because we only build one at a time. Mass produce the unit, and the cost goes down. Don't believe me... check out HD TV's, or computers.

So why don't we do this? The fossil fuel lobby buys the people in power, and it just doesn't. Pure and simple, the lunatics run that asylum.

Back in high school, again the mid 70's, it was pretty common knowledge that you, or I, given the right tools, could manufacture a light bulb that would never burn out. Why doesn't one exist? The light bulb business would cease and desist. Same here with the oil.

BTW, next time you are in your local gas station/convenience store, think about this... You buy a big Gulp, the 32 oz soft drink, for about $1.09. When I worked for 7/11 in the 80's, in Orlando, it was the same price. Back then we only had 5¢ in that big Gulp, and made well over a dollar on each sale.

What's that got to do with anything? The infrastructure to use hydrogen fueled cars does not exist. The profit structure is still there. Simply replace the gasoline tanks with hydrogen tanks, you still have the profit from the convenience store. That said, there would be less need for as many of these stores. You see, on the science channel, they have shown that you can install hydrogen fuel producers in your home for little cost, and run them off either your natural gas supply, or your electrical supply. In essence, you can make most of your own fuel at home.

Also distilled water is not hard to make. Think of all the old moonshine still that used to litter KY!!!

I'm off my box now too Grumpy. Thanks for a great soap box topic to talk about.
