Inspection Slows Flow Of Barge Traffic On Ohio

CNN is reporting a lock break has occurred on the Ohio River near Warsaw, Kentucky, according to the Army Corps of Engineers.
That is where the Markland Dam is located.
Corps spokesman Todd Hornback called the break, which occurred Sunday morning, "catastrophic."
The incident involved structures, and there were no reports of injuries to people.
All traffic on the river has been stopped in both directions since about 9 a.m. ET, Hornback said.
It was not known what caused the break.
One of the broken portions is known as a miter gate, Hornback said.
The Corps of Engineers, on its Web site, says a miter gate "has two leaves that provide a closure at one end of the lock."
They are so named because the two leaves meet at an angle pointing upstream and resembling a miter joint, the Web site said.

now i just found out that one of the gates has fallen in or broke off and one on the other end is barley hangen on that would explain all the current today
I barely caught the tail end of this on WHAS this morning. I went to WHAS website and didn't see anything pertaining to this. Is river traffic still at a stand still? What's the latest word on the repair?
found this on local 12 news cincy
An inspector will be on hand today to try and figure out a fix for a broken lock at a local dam, which is causing a traffic jam of sorts on the Ohio. Barges carrying coal, steel and other products may be delayed for weeks because of the weekend equipment failure.
The commander at Markland Lock and Dams in Warsaw says the problem started Sunday morning. A vessel was traveling through the 1200 foot chamber but when the gates opened, one of the leaves fell off completely. The other one is damaged and still hanging from the wall.
Traffic stopped while engineers worked on a solution. Now, barges have to go through a smaller chamber piece by piece and that's turning a 30 minute trip into a 90 minute process. The commander is hoping those fully loaded barges will be able to lock through the smaller 600 foot chamber without causing further damage.
Col. Keith Landry of the Army Corps of Engineers told Local 12, "Assuming the tests with the fully loaded set of barges goes well we will continue to lock through while we're doing our assessments here. If this test does not go well it wouldn't be prudent for me to allow that to continue until I can stabilize this damaged leaf."
This morning, the commander will start putting together an investigative team to try and figure out exactly what is wrong with that gate. He says it could take several weeks to fix.
The Markland Locks average about 15 ships or barges a day
I saw on the news today that the CQ Princess on its way back from Belterra was locking through when it happened. The people they interviewed said that when it broke, the boat just dropped several feet.
This is a video of when it broke.

Wondering what this will do to fishing Mcalpine this week? I've noticed an increase in flow. I was on a good pattern to, dang. Glad nobody was hurt. Chuck
Nothing Chuck - your increased flow is the result of all the rain. No extra water is being released as a result of this accident. Now if the one remaining gate decides to break... we'll all be fishing in Louisville before we knew what happened...lol.
That's good news Scott, I haven't been able to see the extent of the damage on any local channels around here and my puter is company owned so I can't youtube...probably a good thing lol. Did do pretty well last week when the water was down. Me and a buddy hit several small blues and a 64#er in an area I thought flats would be....Don't tell Mark.LOL You been catchin any after winning the big tourney up there??? Chuck
