SAuger time

For someone who is new to fishing the Ohio, which direction are the Hydro's from the West Point, Salt River ramp? I have a 20ft Fish and Ski and would love to get into some of those stripper/Sauger bites I hear about. I live right by Dixie and it would be a 10 minute drive to that ramp.

Its up river but as some one that is still new to fishing the area (about 6x in my own boat) I HIGHLY suggest your first SEVERAL trips are with some one that knows the area well. The area is unforgiving and will take your life if you are not careful.

Thanks. I will heed that warning and I understand there are alot of surprises out on the Ohio that can put a hole in your boat or ruin a lower unit. I will try to hook up with one of the seniors on this forum before I just decide to put in. I usually go on a whim though when I decide to go fishing. I rarely have time enough to ask buddies as it's 10:00 PM when I decide to go early the next morning. I better get some friends who stay up late and who know the area huh?

Man its been awhile, been BUSY lately. I havnt fished the river in over two months.

Hell, Ive fished in the Gulf Of Mexico more in the last few months then the river!

Hi all, thanks for the info - I haven't been down to the Falls since back in the early spring and it was pretty slow on the saugers then. I am thinking of going out Friday morning for a few hours, but will be hoofing it. I usually park at the interpretive center and walk down.

Often I will take my flyrod, with a selection of chartreuse, white clouser minnows and jig-like flies. But, I'll also take a spinning rod with me, maybe even with some live bait.

Two questions:
1) Is this area fishable right now, or are all of y'all talking about boat-fishing?

2) It sounds like some of you are using live bait - minnows?

Thanks for any tips. I love going out there because it's such a neat spot right in the shadow of dowtown Louisville. A sauger/hybrid/striper/catfish on the end of the line would be a nice bonus!!

McAlpine Dam # 502-775-5056 For you Guys you can call them and find out flow and figure water depth from there. Were I fish I like to see the water levels from 18 - 23 feet.

LOL...man sand isn't all it's cracked up to be is it....It takes about a week for me to start missing the smell of the river. Rivers on the rise right now 41ft at dam 37 at the upper 4 at the lower 2 units. Tue. night reading. With it forcasted to rise the next 3 days I would suggest leaving the flyrod at home. I'd pack a spinning rod, rigged with a jig,and white or chart. grub,tipping with a minnow will help. Fish the rocks behind the interpretive center...closer you get to the point the better. Be carefull...Chuck

Oh wow, I had been thinking of what the river's been looking like the last few days - been at a pretty decent level. Guess it's gonna get a little swollen toward the end of the week.

Are you talking about the "point" where the rocks jut out right before the river cuts back in toward the interpretive center (will try to link an image here: http://terraserver-usa.com/image.asp...sville%7cky%7c )
It looks pretty pronounced in that image and I think I know what you're talking about.
