    Cumberland 2-27 FNF

42* surface temp in Indian Creek. Falling water, stained about 3 ft visibility. Little to no floating debris. Saw lots of isolated shad (1.5" length) flipping below the surface, no visible schools. Got 1 3lb smallie on a 9' leader before noon. Switched to 11' after noon, the bite picked up but no fish. Still very slow. Will try 14' tomorrow. I would expect production to be very slow until the water level stabilizes. No pre-spawn patterns here yet. Creeks are COLD!

Man! Fishing is tough! Tried 14' and 16' leaders today. One bite at 14'. No fish. I'm going to try 18' tomorrow, if I can throw it. At 16' I was so far off the bank I felt like I was fishing in the middle of the lake so a couple more feet should'nt be a big deal.

I was wondering if anyone has ever tried multiple flies, like a sabiki rig? Obviously a bigger bobber is needed and it may be difficult to detect strikes. Just a thought....

Drove over the dam and down to Holcomb's Landing ramp on Saturday, the whole lake in that area looked real muddy for Cumberland. Maybe 8 inch visibilty.

    Jeff,
Great report. I'm jealous that you got out and fished. My trips have been few and far between.

Since we're in the same town, I should stow away in your boat sometime.

Have you tried actually going to a shorter leader - like 6'?

18' was a bust this this morning. Amazingly easy to throw. I'm sure getting a trophy in the boat at that length would make for a funny video.

Know1. Thats next! I'm going back out around 3:30 and throwin a 7 footer with a new fly. You are welcome to come along.

12voltman. The main lake is far dirtier than the creeks.

    Hey,
Like Know1 stated. Try a 6-8 ft leader. Use it with a chart, white fly. Fish points in the creeks. I've whacked them before in the cold water temps (38-42). You may catch some 5-6 pound largeheads doing this. All I ask is a report in return.
    Thanks and good fishing,

You must be staying down at the lake instead of driving down from Nicholasville. Meanwhile, I'm stuck at work and jealous.

Give a shout if you're going down on a weekend sometime, though.

Good luck today. You may just have luck on the shorter leader - I think when the water is this cold, the lethargic shad float up sometimes.

    Pro V Le,

Yes I am, stop in any time! I'll be here all week.

    Bassmaster,

I spent January here with great success. I probably caught more than I did all summer. I was able to follow their movement spending so many days on the water. When surface temps dropped below 45 the fish moved deep. 14+ feet. They seemed unaffected by sunlight while wind was a major factor. I had bright days where I wore em out and snow days that produced nothing. That being said I'm never too smart to learn something new that goes against what I already know. So I'll start chasing em above the 10' mark and let you know the results.

    Hey Jeff,

Thanks for the update. Was possibly trying it this weekend but from the sound of it, I may wait till next week and try Green. It's been a crazy winter for sure and different than the last 3-4 winters. Sorry it didn't work out for you but that short leader does produce with excellent results at times. Winter before last I had two 5+, one 6+ largeheads and 3 smallies around 5 or over on the same day on a 7 ft leader with chart/white fly. Best day I've ever had on it weight wise. Caught several big fish(mostly largemouth) using this technique over the last 3-4 winters. May not happen this time though. I will post when I get a chance to go. Thanks again Jeff.

    Good fishing to ya,
    Tim
