Ditto Dave. Fished KY north of the bridge a day each of the last two weekends and only boated two keepers. Tons of short fish but the better fish don't seem to be up yet. Went south on Barkley and did a little better on quality but still seemed early on the right bite...

those stories { or reports } were told by fishermen, and some fishermen are politicians.:
As best as I can remember the 29lb smallie sack was last year, I do know it happened but I am almost positive it was last year but I heard it was in a cabin fever tournament???? Who knows.....
We fished 4 days last wk on the lbl side of ky lake, ave. about 30 bass per day, most all of them short. About 4-5 keepers each day. My buddy caught a 5 1/2 lb smally and I boated a 3 1/2 lb largemouth. Most of them on jerk baits and a few on shaky head lizzards. We found most of the bass on main lake and secondary points at the mouths of the bays . It's just a matter of time and a few degrees warmer! Does anyone have an opinion on grass being in the backs of the bays this year? I sure hope so.
Like I said, there was a bag of Smallies like that weighed in a tourney a few weeks ago in a Wildcat tournament on the south end of the lake....just not this past weekend and not on the north end. Yeah, we are just a couple of degrees from seeing a lot more big fish taken soon but I would not expect a bunch of big bags of Smallies...the days we used to have on multiple bags of big smallies have not happened in years. But, the Largemouth are definitely on the upswing here over the past few years...and tournament weights over the past few years are positive proof of that coupled with the numbers of Largemouth we catch here. Like I said...only few more degrees. As far as grass....well, that all depends on water levels and clarity in the spring.
Dave, thanks for chiming in with the info. I was about ready to start selling all my stuff! We caught a lot of fish but keepers were few and far between when we were down there.I will do some checking on the report on the Wildcat tournament for this past weekend...I heard that 21 lbs of green fish won it and 14lbs took 4th place, but there was a tourney on far south end of Ky Lake with that kind of bag a couple of weeks ago. I do know for a fact that The Bassmaster weekend series this past Saturday on Ky Lake was won with 24lbs of green fish and 15lbs took 4th place...Fishers of Men here last Saturday was won with 12lbs. Someone is pulling your leg about the lake being on fire down here unless they are fishing 80-100 miles south of Ky Dam...good bags that are topping these tournaments are coming from that area by guys making very long runs. Example: half the field in BASS tourney had one or zero fish...same thing happened to half the field in BFL weekend before: some nice big bags from top of the field that made 80 plus mile runs south...Fishers of Men tourney here this past Saturday only had one limit weighed in. Lot of the big name sticks in BFL and BASS tourney here last two weeks zeroed or had one a fish or two because they stayed up on north ends of the lakes. Now either all my sources that report to me daily or semi daily are doing something terribly wrong and I am doing something terribly wrong, or this is the slowest March I have seen in many years on these lakes north ends overall. We are catching a few good fish but not anywhere near the numbers of big fish we normally catch this time of year...and the Smallmouth fishing has been weak at best in comparison with the past years from about 3 years back...if someone is tearing up numbers of big smallmouth they are keeping a big secret. Offdtop's report is pretty much a mirror of reports from locals fishing the north ends of both lakes. Now if you want to Crappie fish (which I don't), the folks here have been having one of the best Crappie bites in years.
Last wk. during the warm spell, a friend of mine caught several keeper L.M. in the backs of the bays on topwater during the evening bite. Also on a jigging spoon. They should return, as the water temp climbs back up. Hope we get some grass this yr.
I'll be there April 24-May2. The bass should be in at that time. Full moon on that Wednesday the 28th. Crawdaddy hatch should be going on. Water temps should be about right. Got my fingers crossed!
I got mine crossed. Dad and I moved our yearly trip up to that week as well. Normally were there 1st of May. But with flowers probably gone were coming down the 24th for the full moon as well. You would think it will be hammertime!
