you can check the starter, to see if it's bad. it may only need a solenoid, the solenoid is the switch between the starter and keyswitch. I just replaced one on my 90 hp mercury. the part cost 46.00 new. to check the starter, take the cover off the motor. locate the starter, beside the starter. is a switch, it may be round or squire. with two big wires with 1/2 inch nuts on them. one is a neg and one is pos. take a pair pliers with insulated handles, or a screwdriver, and touch it to both neg and positive, hold it firm, to keep sparks from arching. and if the starter is good it will crank. if the starter cranks, you only need the starter solenoid. ps.. let it crank to check the starter, but don't let it start without a water supply. hope this helps.![]()

x 10 what Fred said. If you still need a mechanic Robbie Sargent (859-792-2088)on Herrington just off of hwy. 34. As good as they come & his prices are very reasonable. He also only charges for the time it takes to do a job & not what the book says it takes.
thanks for all the help. I called one local maarine dealer. $350.00 for a new starter plus time to put it on. They were 3 weeks backed up. I found a new replacemnt starter on ebay for $65.00 and $ 12.00 shipping. after looking at it I don't know why I can't do it. I've replace car starters before. I guess I'm getting old.
There is a new place open in paris doing boat and motor repairs. I believe he worked for one of the bigger places in lexington and went out on his own. I took an outboard there a few weeks ago and he was very helpful. A friend of mine has his number, pm me if you want me to get it for you. His shop is located in the first shopping center in paris on the right when you come into town in the back left. He is just getting started so i would say he is eager for some business.
You might also want to your leads, if not making good contact it will just click as you say. A med. file or good wire brush will do the trick!
if you will do what I told you in the above post, you can fix your starter for 45.00 most likely the solenoid is your problem. use a screwdriver and, put it across the two biggest wires on the solenoid. with the key turned on. if the starter cranks, the solenoid is bad. a new one cost 45.00 and takes 10 minutes to exchange them. two bolts and 4 wires. try it before spending 400.00 at a dealer. if you can't find the solenoid by looking at the motor, you stand back by the motor. and let someone try to start it. and you will hear the clicking noise. the solenoid is whats making the clicking noise.thanks for all the help.
