    frustration

Went up the wolf river 3 days ago, casting small tubes for crappie and gills, couldn't get a hit because of all the gars.Must have hooked 20 of them, landed a few, and quit. Went back the nextdaywith spinner baits to try for LMB, same problem, even had one knock the spinner blade off the lure.Throwing a fluke was a joke also. So yesterday got out the trolling gear. caught one 19 inch SMB, and 3 drum.
The ramp at burkesville is now open, the river has dropped several feet, color is murky.

    Angry Re: frustration

gorski, its the same story, shad after dead shad with big razor cuts down the side. maybe the memorial day crowd of boats will run over a few thousand of the pesky dinosaurs. until somebody comes up with a good recipe for gar....they have no predator to control their numbers.

I know they are supposed to edible, but you need a chain saw to fillet them.I hate to kill fish, throw carp back in even, but am thinking of doing those guys in. Maybe a noose knot aroung their mouth, and let em starve to death.Dale in places is over run with them.

I like keeping one of those souvenirs bats that you get at the Louisville Sluger museum...you know...the kind that are small...mine has the Carl Yastrzenski autograph on it! All it takes is a strait hit in the head...right between the eyes....both drum and gars get the hit. Turtles have to eat to!

Did you all see the recent episode of KY Afield with Tim Farmer bow hunting those things? I was really impressed with how he could shoot those things with a bow and arrow using his teeth!! I can't shoot a bow straight with two perfectly working arms...the man is amazing.

One thing I didn't notice in that clip was what they did with the fish after they shot it...do you think they put them back in the water?? Did they keep them and clean them or dispose of them somewhere else?

actually i beleive that is one reason the stocked the alligator gar in the ohio a year or so back. they beleive the alligator gar will grow large enough to thin them out some. also i have seen some huge gator gar caught on tv shows im sure they will be fun to catch once they reach full growth. some of hose gator gar were 300-400 pounds !!!

I've heard that in some parts of the country, gar meat sells for more than catfish and sells better too. I think its the Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas area.

Gar in Cumberland are the worst I've ever seen them, it's horrible. Bowfisherman need to go down there and spear about 4 million of them.

    I HATE GAR!

They actually aren't bad to eat. Take a pair of tin snips and cut up the back and down the belly then fillet as normal. A spoon will seperate the meat from the hide. You get a long tenderloin with no bones. Don't soak in water just a quick rinse right before you fry it so the meat doesn't get mushy. They also make a heck of a fish patty which is the original way I had them cooked before trying to fry them.

I tack the hides to a board to dry and use them to back self bows. My kids like to dry the skulls out and play with them, turtles get the rest... If you think about it they eat very little besides other fish so they are very clean. To me the meat is better than catfish, less red meat and not nearly as muddy tasting.

I agree though, with few natural predators I keep every one I catch even if they are only going under the tomato plants.
