    Internet Privacy

I have seen all sorts of things saying that your/our privacy is protected on Facebook, Twitter, etc. but I wonder how private it is when others can tell exactly where you are from, at least the city, when you are on a website.

Yesterday, I was on a fishing site from Michigan and there was a place that offered to tell how the fishing was "in your area." I clicked on it, expecting to get reports for Michigan lakes and instead got reports for Nolin, Barron, Rough and Green. Just a little while ago I was on the Michigan Department of Natural Resources site and there was an ad for "whiter teeth" with a secret discovered by a "Radcliff mother". It must be a small world that the Radclff mother and I both live in the same city.

If they can find out what city I live it, I wonder how much other information they can get just by looking around the web and where I visit.

    Re: Internet Privacy

I would guess it has something to do with your IP address that they can at least trace a general area for you. The scarier stuff is if you google your full name. There are sites out there that collect personal info on people. You can see general stuff just by clicking on a person's name. Give them a few $$ and they'll provide a bunch more info. I was on one site that provided my address plus you could click a link to get directions to my place. I opt out of those sites whenever I find them. I can see no reason that personal information should be online and so easily accessable.

    Re: Internet Privacy

I guess I am not alone in this. Today's E-town News Enterprise had two columns about the lack of privacy and/or security on the internet. I am sure, as APB pointed out, a lot of it has to do with the ability of malfeasents to track our IP address, but the columns also said much of the problem is the propensity of people today posting personal stuff on blogs and other social webpages. Both writers also took the government, and specifically the Obama administration, to task for not during more to secure our privacy. Apparently candate Obama promised to do more to secure the internet and now he wants to give control of it away from the US and to the U.N.

I don't remember that promise since he made so many and naturally won't follow through on many.
I guess if you make enough speeches people forget what you said 20 speeches ago.
