Another School Killing

Last Monday a 62 year old man went to one of the schools in this area and was turned away. He returned a while later, walked in and pointed a .380-caliber handgun at the principal's head. The School Resource Officer intervened, with her gun pointed at him while he pointed one at her. She kept backing him away from the principal until sheriff's deputies arrived. The man started pointing his gun back and forth between the deputies and the resource officer and three officers fired their guns and killed the man. They discovered that he also had another handgun in his back pocket. Nobody seems to know why the man went to the school or why he intended to shoot anyone. He was well known to the law enfocement community because they had prior problems with him.

I don't understand why, if they had already turned the man away, how it was that he managed to walk right back into the same school at 9:15 a.m. carrying a gun in his hand and one in his back pocket. Am I missing something here?

I wonder what type of school district this was in? Large or small, was it a high school or an elementary school? If it's like Louisville, Ky schools where we have almost 200 schools in the system, I'd say someone would have been watching that rascal until he was off school property and out of site. Most schools now days have survellience cameras in place, most especially high schools. DJD might be able to add his .02 worth on this subject cause I think he works in low voltage systems.

At any rate...to dang much violence in the world in the what should be the most civilized of public places.

Schools in Bullitt County have a school resource officer, but they roam the halls, which leaves teh front doors unattended... so anyone could walk in andgo straight to teh front office unimpeded...

Tim no doubt our bid packages are loaded with security and in some cases access control. Some counties have all the doors locked down once school starts and the only way in to be buzzed in remotely after u have identified yourself and are being viewed on camera which by the way is recorded on a Digital recorder.
The high schools we have done in eastern KY average 160 cameras and the security office looks like something out of a prison system. 60 plasma monitors and several officers watching the property at all times during school hours.
I pulled up to do some service and they met me at the door since they watched me pull in with their cameras.
Another thing that is disgusting is they place alot of cameras around the food areas to catch kids placing junk in the food. It grosses me out to hear of the stories from the food service folks.... Yuck!!

I don't know which schools, but not all have the doors unattended. Now at Bullitt Central you can walk in the first set of doors to access the office, but you cannot walk into the actual school without going through the office to do so. At Bernheim Middle, the doors are locked and you have to ring a bell and be buzzed in by someone in the office.

It is scary and sad we have a society that is so bad we have to monitor and lock down schools. How low can we go????? I live in a county that is only 20,000 we do not lock down our schools and you can walk in at any time but there are signs telling you you must report to the office and check in. I will consider myself lucky.

I can remember a time when I bought a new rifle to deer hunt with, a Rem 700 BDl in 25.06, and I had it in my truck and my teachers asked me to go get it so they could see it, I went out and got it and carried it into the school and even the princ took a look at it, and I had show and tell with the teachers. We were also allowed to carry pocket knifes and we traded a lot of them to each other and teachers also. I went to a Rural high school, in Tompkinsville Ky, Grad in 80. My how times have changed and it is sad that schools have gotten this way now. I miss the days when people had common sense and respected the schools and teachers and guns etc. It is a shame that these killings go on in schools as the main reason people do this at schools is the press coverage that they get as it is smybolic and gets the utmost attention. It has become a sad sad world.

It was a high school with 1,200 students. Last year the Superintendent of Schools asked for money for school security systems and the county commission flat out denied his request. He warned them that they could regret their decision. IMO The 3 Stooges would make better Commissioners. For some reason the elected officials stupidly believes that school violence only happens some other place, in larger cities. The man that was killed lived about 5 miles from the school and some of the people at the school KNEW him. Some people said he was mean and others said he was crazy. That man was angry and tried the same thing a few years ago at City Hall where the police dept is located and spent time in jail but was not ruled crazy.
