Concerned About Safety of my Remington 700 Rifle

So, I've owned the model 700 rifle for ~35 years and never experienced a quote "Remington Moment", but maybe I'm one of the 1 in 20 lucky ones ?

Recently saw the TV show by CNBC "Remington Under Fire", originally aired on Oct 20, 2010. Has to do with; after pushing the Safety off to the Fire Position, then Wham/Bam that sucker may go off AT ANY TIME, WITHOUT the trigger being pulled. Dam, that could and has been a BAD DAY for some Remington 700 owners!

So, what should I do with mine? Has Remington acknowledged the problem?.....NO! Will Remington fix my rifle? If not, then, Is their a gunsmith I could take the rifle to have it retroed with a NEW/SAFE TRIGGER MECHANSIUM?

Has always thought I'd give my hunting guns to my Grandson, but not this one unless I can get it fixed.

I've hunted with remington 700 model guns for roughly 32 years myself,and never had a problem with any,although I've used several different guns over the years that include a model 700 BDL 30-06,at least 2 model 700 ADL 30-06 bolt actions,and a model 700 ADL 7mm mag bolt action.
I didn't read your article,but is it a specific year or caliber this is happening on?

My dad had a Rem. 700 and it went off when he was unloading it. It put a nice whole in the side of his truck. He wrote to Remington and they asked him to send in the rifle. He did and they made a repair to it and sent it back. That was in 1982. He was the butt of a lot of jokes from my brothers. He was supposed to be hunting "Buck" not "Truck". All you can do is ask Remington to fix it or find a good gunsmith.

me and my dad both have 700 bdl.. my dads being 30+ years old 6mm and i have a .270 which is 5 years old and mine u can open the bolt with it on safe and my dads u cant.. he called remington and they said that they would fix it free of charge.. but i doesnt want to send it b/c like i said the gun is 30+ years old and couldnt haul the deer in a semi that he has killed with it and they are not easy to find in that caliber if it was to get messed up somehow.. so to answer the question yes remington will fix the gun..

This shouldnt be an issue if you are paying attention to gun safety rule #1... always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.

With that said, I would just call Remington directly and talk to someone.

I had a buddy with an older 700 that he was adjusting the trigger pull on. It was possible to turn the trigger pull down light enough that it would fire if the safety when the safety was disengaged. He discovered it by accident and experimentation and had no intention of leaving a hunting rifle turned down so light. He turned the trigger back up to 3lbs and the gun won't go off unless you pull the trigger. Have you had a problem with your rifle or are you concerned because others have?

I know a guy that used to be big in competition shoots,I believe he won state title at one time.He's big into Remingtons and I know he regularly tampers with the trigger pull on his guns,but I've never heard of any going off just by disengaging the safety.Like a previous poster said,Gun Safety rules are always a good idea.
