Hovey Lake

Thinking about going over to hovey soon since they removed the horsepower limitation. I havent been there in what seems like 50 years, so anybody know what I will be getting into? I know from what I've heard that Hovey has been cleaned of good fish and has had "trash" species run rampant. Can I realistically expect to catch a limit of bass if I go there? thanks in advance.

Not sure what to expect at Hoveys. I would think that a lot of fish from the flooded Ohio River made it into Hoveys this last month.

Hovey has been silting in over the last 30 or 40 years.

I'd like to know if those asian carp are in Hovey's yet. I read that they are in the Walbash River and have made it all the way up to the Great Lakes now. I would guess that they are coming up the Ohio River too.

I hate to see these exoitic fish invading our waterways. They should have shot the idiots that brought them to this country. But I digress.

Let us know how you do if you go. I am sure others would like to know too.

There are Asian carp in there. Bass fishing is horrible at best. Panfish are tiny to small in size.

went one time .... hated it ... never caught a native species... the boat caught 4 asian carp in a 100 yd stretch of motor running and i caught one common carp and buddy never had a bite. found a channel cat on a trot line... i highly dont recommend wasting your time to fish this lake... go to lynnville or something if your looking to travel... thats my 2 cents

One and only time i fished hovey was back in the late 1960 and then for crappie. then moved out of the area, moved back into the area in the 90's and was told the crappie fishing at Hovey was no more. Never got a clear answer as to what happed other than some said , "oil well's resulted in pollution into the lake", i.e. excessive salt levels. All I can say is, that is one of the lakes that was a good fishery back in the 60's.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will find another place to go I guess. Figured carp had taken over. I put in at grandview a lot and will catch those silver carp at 30-40 lbs all day long. It is quite fun, but they stink my boat up. I kill as many as I can, but they are just running rampant now.

I need some education.... What carp are they intentionally stocking the water with to control vegetation?(I mean in general, not a specific body of water)

They had some fish ponds down South some where a few years back. When the Mississippi River flooded it overflowed into those ponds and allowed these carp to escape into the Illinois and Ohio River. Over the years these carp overpopulated the rivers and have out competed the native fish that eat algae.

In some sections of these River these Sliver, Asian and Grass carp are there in the thousands.

Some of these fish will jump up out of the water when a boat motor is nearby. These fish can grow to 40 lbs and they fly out of the water and some can jump into your moving boat. Imagine having a boat moving at 40 mph or more and having a 40 lb fish hit you in the face at the same time?

These fish have no know natural predators to control their populations.

It's possible for these asian carp to swim up into Pigeon Creek and then into bluegrass creek and then at times of flooding they could reach Otter Pit easily.

We will know soon if they are in Otter Pit as they reproduce very quickly and grow rapidly. And since they like to jump out of the water when your boat gets close to them they will make their presence known.

The last time it flooded so that fish could get into Otter Pit was back in 1997. This year the flooding could have allowed these fish to reach otter pit.

I think you are referring to just regular grass carp
