Not an expert by any means but I would make sure the connection is good first and then see if the wire is big enough to handle your motor.

Hey guys....I have a MotorGuide foot-operated trolling motor on my Tracker boat...alls been fine for a year now, but the last two trips out...when running on high speed, the positive cable connected to the battery is getting really hot and in a few minutes or so, throws the yellow safety protective switch thats on the battery cable. After a couple of minutes, it cools down and allows me to run the rest of the day on lower speeds but not high speed. It will just kick off again. Whats up here? thanks

I had the same problem before on a MK, and after a lot of searching, I found some wires touching, solved the problem.
