Thanks Geo. What does reacting to the plastic mean? Yes both sides are melting and yes I leave my key in. Will taking it our everytime solve the problem? Thought it might be a short but it is a brand new ignition and the old one did the same.

The second question was I still have a key for my lids I haven't broken one off in the lock but I can't find anyone who has a small enough key to make a new one. I've tried wally world, a hardware store and a marine dealer.
Again, a lock smith can help you out. They've got keys in all styles and shapes, sizes.
Different types of plastics with different chemicals REACT differently when they touch.
It happens all the time with lures. You put a couple hard baits in a box with some worms, and in a few months you have a mess of goo....same thing.
The rubber on the key cover is touching the hard plastic of the key slot. That is causing a chemical reaction that is MELTING both.......
*****....but a common problem
First, I'd stop leaving the key in.
Second, I'd remove the cover from the key and replace with something else.
Third I'd put some talcum or something on the plastic where the melting is.....

Thanks for the advice. Think I'll try the talcum and taking my key out. That won't be easy to retrain myself since I've been leaving it in for 43 years. It is beyond my understanding why Skeeter would use two materials together that would react to each other. Thanks again.
20 years ago it would have NEVER happened...........Cheaper junk in everything now. Save a few cents on manufacture of a key cover, but cost the consumer a few hundred when he has to pay for a new ignition or new plastic console piece. HORRIBLE.Thanks for the advice.
