Re: Facebook Parenting: For the Troubled Teen

Bug, I believe that you can understand how teenagers think with one child, or with a dozen. You can understand how teenagers think without actually being a parent of one, as a matter of fact. You can also NOT understand how teenagers think with one child, or with a dozen, or with none.

It has nothing to do with how many teens you've raised.

As to my insight, I've offered my opinion just like everyone else. If you disagree with it, say so. If you have some life experiences that show how publicly humiliating your children has worked out for you and them, great - share it. We can all learn something from someone else.

I believe that grounding kids just doesn't work.........that's the easy way out for parents when it comes to punishment.

I disagree.......I also disagree with Woody on timeout.

    All three work equally.

    Timeout, spanking and grounding.

Grounding works GREAT older. Timeout works great as a precursor to spanking. Spankings......SERIOUS spanking only occurred when all else failed.

I've use all.....AND will tell you the single best timeout method, is SIT on the STAIRS.........5 minutes to a toddler is like 10 hours to you and me.

Another good timeout method.........Timeout standing with a book in both hands palm up. YEA.......try that for a while.

And the all time best timeout..........My wife did it once while we were out at a nice dinner. BOTH girls decided making a fuss was a good idea. They were 4 and 6 at the time. My wife took the both to the bathroom, found a nice spot on the wall and made them STAND there with their nose on the bathroom wall for what seemed like an eternity. You know what........that was the LAST time they ever acted up at dinner.

I've given them SERIOUS swats on the butt. The worse one either of my daughters received was when my oldest 5 at the time ran out in the street. I busted her butt really hard. SHE needed to know that was unacceptable, and timeout would not have conveyed the message.

    Later,

    Geo

Hard work, stuff the kid hates, something that won't soon be forgotten.

Most kids you ask what they got grounded for last time, they usually have trouble remembering. Now if you ask the kid what he got in trouble for that he had to chop firewood until his hands bled, he's going to tell you pretty quick!
