Just checked the weather forecast; calling for night time lows in the zero range around mid week. Crap, maybe I should trade that Lund in for an Ice Breaker!! No F&F for me this week!!
(I know, the Ole Man is a wimp.)
Not a wimp...........SAFE.
I usually need the high to be above freezing. It doesn't have to be but makes it easier to go.
I've been out when the temps didn't get out of the teens and that is bone chilling cold. Add some wind and it is simply brutal.

couldn't take it any more today so I went and cut a hole in the ice on the farms pond. The ice was a good 4-1/2 to 5 inches thick. used a popeye jig and a float and fly jig tipped with a bee moth and caught 2 bass 2 crappie and 25 blue gill. not a bad day.
Way to go nitro929!!!! So hope you released a couple of them to the grease? ![]()
The water was so cold I didn't have the heart to put the poor blue gill back in. Nothing like a fresh fish sandwich with 6" of snow on the ground![]()
Nitro, do u uses ultralight poles when u ice fish? And on the fnf can u fish it on a pond? Also is there a specific type of jig I need? Anything else dealing with the fnf would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, drew
Yes I used an ultralight pole to ice fish, 4 lb Pline flourclear line. I used a punisher 1/16 ounce float and fly jig (The duck color) mainly for weight, the fish would not bite the jig without the bee moth tipped on the hook ( I tried) you could just use a hook and split shot maybe but I just like using the flys. I had a better hook up ratio with a popeye jig(1/32 oz) on the blue gill but caught the bass and crappie on the float and fly jig.
I just cut a hole drop the jig to the bottom let it sit, reeled up a foot let it sit, reeled up a foot let it sit. if I didn't get bit I moved deeper cut another hole so on so on. cut six different holes before I found the sweet spot.
That's farm pond ice fishing, I am sure its a lot harder on the lakes. And just a little red neck tip a chainsaw makes a heck of a good ice auger.
Would you recommend a ultra light for panfish and the fnf? I'm considering getting one just because light tackle with big bluegills and crappie is hard to beat. Cabelas has a rod and reel setup for $30 I think.
So after reading nitros post I decided to try some ice fishing myself. I went out not super confident but was surprised when I got my first hit about 5 mins in. I ended up catching about 10 bluegill and 2 crappie. It was pretty challenging and all new to me but was fun. Thank god for those hot hands or I probably wouldn't of been able to handle the cold. I was using a Popeyes just like nitro said he did.

I was just on an small farm pond the ice was pretty thick I'd say about 3 inches as it took a little bit for me to punch a hole through. Let's just say it was thick enough to where I was never nervous at any point.
I really have the itch bad. I actually like cold weather but I am now more than ready for some warm weather and getting out on a lake.
